Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. Gary Klingensmith (see story in this edition) coached
the Gallaudet football team in the 1965, 1966 and 1967
seasons. His Gallaudet football teams won four games during
his three seasons. Each victory was special. Why?

A. List of Gary’s special wins:

1965 – defeated DC Teachers College to snap a 25-game losing
streak

1966 – defeated Frostburg, the only time Gallaudet beat them
in a long series (Gallaudet no longer plays Frostburg)

1967 – defeated Shepherd, the only time Gallaudet beat them
in a long series (Gallaudet no longer plays Shepherd, which
now plays NCAA-II)

1967 – defeated Lorton, the only time Gallaudet beat them
in a long series (Lorton is no longer in existence, and it
was Gallaudet’s first 2-win season since 1959)

Remembering Mark Gobble

Mark Gobble, former Texas School for the Deaf principal,
was hit by a car while jogging and died on the street.
He was getting ready for his new job at at Boston University.

Athletic director Chris Hamilton said:

SAD!   Hit us hard in the Austin community.   He was
a well rounded person.   He did coach MS football in 2003.
He sometimes would volunteer his time helping the Varsity team.
When he was a principal here, he was our NUMBER one fan.
Always stopped my office the next day to chat about the games
that he watched.

Mark, who played a season of football at Florida School for
the Deaf & Blind, never played football at Gallaudet. He
was hurt in the pre-season camp and never played football
again.

Oldtimers will remember his father, the late Ed Gobble, an
all-time Gallaudet football great who put in two seasons of
semi pro football with Virginia Sailors (Atlantic Coast
Football Conference) and with Frederick Falcons (Interstate
Football League), during the late sixties.

(newspaper story)

THE government has promised to extend cash awards to the disabled persons
who win medals at major international events. Speaking during the final
day of the Deaf Athletics Championships held at the Nyayo Stadium on
Wednesday, Sports Minister Paul Otuoma said the deaf athletes have been in
the forefront in bringing medals into the country and should also be given
recognition just like their disabled counterparts.

The event attracted 215 from the 47 counties and a team was selected to
represent the country at the second World Deaf Athletics Championships to
be held in Toronto, Canada between July 12 and 22 this year.  The
government honours excelling sportsmen and women with cash award which in
turn helps to empower them economically,. said Otuoma.

The cash award scheme is uniform for all individual and teams regardless
of their ability. In this regard, the athletes who will win medals will be
awarded with Sh300,000 for gold, Sh200,000 (silver) and Sh100,000 for
bronze medal.. .Deaf athletes have continued to be good ambassadors and do
the country proud,. remarked Otuoma, observing the excellence of the team
that took part in the 2009 Deaflympic summer games where the country
garnered four gold, two silver and one bronze.

Otuoma said the government is in the process of developing 30 sports
stadia around the country in line with the Vision 2030 and will be user
friendly for both able and disabled persons. However, otuoma observed that
it will be a huge task for the government to develop these facilities on
their own and called on the corporate and individual sponsors to come on
board and assist.

Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. Pan American Games for the Deaf? What is this all about?

A. It is just like the Deaflympics, except that participating
nations are from North America, Central America and South America.
DeafDigest Sports cannot say for other Pan American nations, but
best American deaf athletes may necessarily not be on the USA
Pan American teams for various reasons.

Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. What was Dr Leonard Elstad’s famous comment?

A. Dr Leonard Elstad served as Gallaudet president,
1946-1969. He loved sports with a passion, and
as a young man, while attending graduate classes
at Gallaudet, he coached the Gallaudet baseball
team. He made a comment that DeafDigest Sports
editor never forgot. Elstad said:

Football is very important to Gallaudet because
this sport trains football players to become
coaches at schools for the deaf.

How true!

Past Gallaudet football players currently coaching at:

Florida – Eric Lefors
Maryland – Joshua Doudt
Michigan – Phil Endicott
Model – Jimmy Gardner
Riverside – Rantz Teeters
Texas – Kelvin Etkie
Wisconsin – Mike Eldred

There are also a few other Gallaudet graduates coaching
football at deaf schools but they did not play football
at Gallaudet.

The Maryland-Model game will be very interesting
because Doudt and Gardner were teammates on Gallaudet’s
recent successful football seasons

Elstad was a newly installed president when a group of
students approached him, wanting football to be
restarted as a Gallaudet sport (no football teams 1938
through 1946). Elstad gave the students the green light!

Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. Baseball is being played on the Gallaudet campus
this summer. What is this all about?

A. DC Grays, a team in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball
League (which uses wooden bats) plays its home games
at Hoy Field. The Gallaudet administration has nothing
to do with the DC Grays operations. According to the
DC Grays website, two Gallaudet players – William
Bissell and Tommy Barksdale is with the team. The first
game is today. Hope our Gallaudet players do well.
The Grays have players from many NCAA-I baseball programs,
whereas Gallaudet plays on the NCAA-III level.

2013 Deaflympics officially to be held at Sofia, Bulgaria

as announced by ICSD:

Bulgaria has also offered to host the 2013 Deaflympics, in Sofia. Sofia
has many advantages. All the required venues are already in place.
Bulgaria also has a a great history of hosting deaf sports events. And the
government is supportive.

There is much work to do and little time. ICSD is moving ahead at full
speed. Next week, we will send you preliminary entry forms. ICSD and Sofia
2013 need to quickly understand how many athletes are likely to attend
next year. In the coming months, we will develop a preliminary schedule
and finalize hotel details.

(DeafDigest Sports editor’s note: Sofia hosted the 1993 Deaflympics.
He covered the Deaflympics for the Silent News, no longer in
business. What is remembered most about the Deaflympics was
that transportation was easy and cost of meals at restaurants
were reasonably low – a full meal could be had for just ten
dollars. That was 20 years ago. Still low cost? Do not know)

Football news

North Carolina and Eastern North Carolina will be combining
their two football programs into one team. Both schools are
approximately 250 miles apart! The state has approved
this arrangement.

Hope all will go well with this arrangement – because there
are always problems – homecoming day dates, uniform and colors,
lack of combined practice sessions, players on both schools
fighting for playing time, different coaching philosphies
among football coaches at both schools, etc, etc. Both
schools will use the video to communicate with each other
daily on football matters (practice plans, plays, etc).

DeafDigest Sports hopes this venture will succeed because
Eastern North Carolina, which has a proud football tradition,
had no team last season. It is better to have a different
football arrangement than no football at all!

Statement from Scott Skelton, North Carolina AD:

In an effort to keep the rich tradition of football alive at NCSD and
ENCSD, it has been decided that ENCSD (Eastern NC School for the
Deaf) and NCSD will be combining resources and players to have a
team.  It is an unique concept that will take some work but both
schools are committed to keeping the football tradition alive. It has
already been approved by NCHSAA.  We are expecting 17-18 players
total and think it will be a rewarding experience for all involved.
Since the schedule was already set before this decision was made,
most games will be played either at NCSD or in the western part of
North Carolina. ENCSD is looking into possibly adding one or two more
games in their area.

We are looking forward to this huge challenge and making it a
successful one for all involved.

Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. First time in history that two deaf football teams
combine into one team?

A. No. Some years back Arizona and Phoenix, both schools
approximately 120 miles apart, combined their football
teams in to one team. This arrangement lasted two seasons
before both went back to their separate ways. Arizona,
however, combined with a small private school, and played
another two seasons before splitting. And way back in the
early sixties, Georgia combined with Cave Spring HS. This
arrangement lasted for years until the school closed doors
sometime in the eighties. In fact one of the former
Cave Spring HS players – Erik Whitworth, is a Georgia
football coach!

Not in football, but in softball – Lexington and Mill Neck
girls softball teams combined as one team one season during
the eighties. Both schools did not like this arrangement
and gave it up after one season.

Again in softball, New York State-Rome invited girls from
the Rome Free Academy (those not good enough to make their
own high school team) to play with the deaf girls. This
arrangement started in the early nineties – and it was
a fairly successful venture. And some of these hearing
girls became teachers of the deaf and ASL interpreters!
