deaf professional boxer defeated in big fight

newspaper story as edited

A three-day long Borneo Martial Arts Expo took place.

In the championship finals, deaf boxer Sunny ‘The Silencer’
N. Sabornido was defeated. It was said to be the most
eagerly awaited match between two top contenders.

Sunny ‘The Silencer’ left the crowd in awe after defeating his opponent,
Fu Chen Yi representing Tomoi Labuan, in the semi-finals and delivered a
KO shot in the second round after only 31 seconds.

The crowd was left on the edge of their seats as these two met in the
five-round final match which began around half an hour before the new year
countdown. The opponents exchanged blow after blow which earned more
cheers from the crowd.

As Sunny could not hear the encouragement coming from his fans, being the
first ever deaf professional fighter in Malaysia, the crowd got on their
feet and showed him the ASL (American sign language) sign for cheer and
applause.

Unfortunately the match was cut short as ‘The Garagas Man’ delivered a
final KO blow which left Sunny to return without the title belt. The match
ended after a minute and 18 seconds into the second round.

When speaking to Daily Express, Sunny said that he does not see being deaf
as a shortcoming and has strong dedication and passion for martial arts
which allows him to express himself and put his utmost effort in what he
loves most.

a deaf adult team wins league basketball championship

A team of deaf players (including Jeremias Valencia,
Steve Biskpuiak-Valencia, Zamaica Gage and Osei Morris)
won the Riverside league adult basketball championship.

The deaf team was seeded #4 but upset seeded #1 team and
then seeded #2 team to win the championship by two points.

Jeremias Valencia has been playing in the league since he
was 19 years old with different teams, that included
past deaf basketball stars – Jimmy Newsome, Michael Torres
and David Hamilton – but never a league championship!

The team had a woman, a former Gallaudet player – Zamaica
Gage.
