GU’s Alyssa Barlow named to Fastpitch News’ preseason All-American softball team

WASHINGTON – Fastpitch News, an online women’s softball newspaper, named
its 2018 preseason NCAA DIII All-American Softball Team and selected
Gallaudet University senior pitcher/first baseman Alyssa Barlow (Chandler,
Ariz.) for the second team. This is the first Fastpitch News honor in
program history.

Barlow, last season, posted an .518 batting average where she tallied 58
hits, 10 doubles, four triples, 28 runs, 23 runs batted in, 76 total bases
and 11 walks. In the field, she had a .958 fielding percentage with 150
putouts and 33 assists. In the circle, she won six games in 16 starts,

Arkansas football

Another honor for Shaq’Ke Robinson.  He was selected to play in the
Arkansas Activities Association statewide All-Star game in June.

note:
Arkansas did not play 8-man football this past fall. Shaq’Ke Robinson,
a senior, then joined the 11-man team at a nearby high school. As a
devastating force on defensive line, he was selected as DeafDigest
Sports 11-man Football Defensive Player of the Year

Florida boys’ basketball

1/23 at River City Science Academy (Jacksonville):
Dragons 58
Halifax 62
Halftime score: FSDB 23-27 RCSA

It was a back n forth affair all night.  In the end RCSA made more plays
than we did.  The fans certainly got their money’s worth.  However, this
poor ol’ coach, probably needs to have his blood pressure checked.  This
is a team we beat by 17 the last
time we played.  For whatever reason, we just couldn’t find that extra
gear to pull away this time.

Next week is our last week of games and we’ve got 3 of them (2 are at home
after being away from Settles since 12/11/17).
Senior Night will be on 2/1 vs a very formidable Calvary Christian team.
We will start the Senior night presentation at 5:30 and tip off at 6.

Season record: 11-8

Next games: 1/30 @ SJCDS (Orange Park). Tipoff at 7. V Girls play at 530.
1/31 HOME vs Duval Charter. Tipoff at 7:30. MS boys play at 6.
2/1 HOME SENIOR NIGHT vs Calvary Christian. Seniors presentation at 5:30,
Tipoff at 6.

Hockey family with hearing impairment heading to Canadian Deaf Games

It’s what the Kyte family leaves behind in the locker room that sets them
apart — their hearing aids.

Members of the Ottawa family, four of whom attend university in Nova
Scotia, will be competing at the Canadian Deaf Games next month in
Winnipeg, one of five teams in the ice hockey event.

The family of hockey players, all hearing impaired, will play together
under their family name — Team Kyte.

They don’t sign, they lip read and use their hearing aids.

But to prepare for the competition, the players have stopped wearing their
hearing aids, which they’re not allowed to use in the tournament in order
to level the playing field for players who are completely deaf.
