Gallaudet’s Andy Cruz named Division III Men’s Basketball HERO of the Week

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Gallaudet University senior forward Andy Cruz (Bronx,
N.Y.) was named the Division III Men’s Basketball HERO of the Week as
announced Friday by HERO Sports for his performance last week against
North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe College of Saint Elizabeth on
Jan. 27.

Cruz scored 21 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, made six blocks, five steals
and passed out two assists in a 79-72 victory over the Eagles in the Field
House on Padden Court.

Cruz collected 175 votes to win 75.11 percent of the weekly vote over nine
other top Division III players from last week.

Gallaudet men’s basketball

GU tripped up on the road at Morrisville St.

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University men’s basketball team fell
79-63 to Morrisville State College on the road Saturday in a North Eastern
Athletic Conference (NEAC) game.

Gallaudet (6-14, 6-6 NEAC) outscored Morrisville St. (12-8, 10-2 NEAC) in
the second half by one, 38-37, but the Bison entered halftime down 42-25.

Freshmen guard Preston Kelly (Fishers, Ind.) netted 15 of his game-high 19
points in the second half. Senior foward Andy Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) and
junior center Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) scored 13 points each in
the loss.

Gallaudet women’s basketball

Bison duo combine for 63 points against Morrisville St. on the road

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University women’s basketball team lost
a shootout with Morrisville State College, 92-81, here Saturday in a North
Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game.

Gallaudet (8-12, 6-6 NEAC) fell behind early as Morrisville St. (11-9, 9-3
NEAC) jumped out to a quick 27-11 lead after the first quarter. From there
GU outplayed Morrisville but came up just short in this NEAC divisional
crossover contest.

Junior guard Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) scored 23 of her career-high
37 in the first half where GU trailed 54-40 to the Mustangs. Neild made 5
of 7 three-pointers and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
She also recorded a game-high eight steals to go with four assists, two
rebounds and two blocks.

Fellow junior Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) complimented Neild with a
career best 26-point game as she made 12 of 25 shots. Shysh was second to
Neild with four steals, four assists and two rebounds.

Indiana girls’ basketball

A balanced offensive attack has the University Lady Trailblazers in the
Class 1A Sectional 58 championship. Lindsey Syrek led three Trailblazers
in double figures with 18 points, as University earned a 63-50 win over
the Indianapolis School for the Deaf Hoosiers Friday night.
