a dedication

DeafDigest Sports dedicates this edition to Joseph Maxwell
that departed us. At Gallaudet he played football and
ran track during the late fifties, and took part in
the Deaflympics.

He then had a long career in schools for the deaf as
football, soccer and track coach at Kansas, Governor
Baxter and then at Oregon Schools for the Deaf.

Gallaudet baseball

Gallaudet drops night game with SUNY Canton, 11-7

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Gallaudet University struck first against SUNY Canton
here Monday night under the lights at the Player Development Complex –
Field 5 but the slugfest ended up in favor of the Roos, 11-7.

Gallaudet (2-10-1) rallied in the top of the seventh with four runs as
senior first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) doubled home two
runs. GU cut the SUNY Canton lead to two, 9-7, but the Roos added a run in
the bottom of the seventh and eighth to put the game away.

SUNY Canton (1-5) picked up its first of the season as six different
players had two or more hits in the game. Starting pitcher Derrek Dupont
picked up the win while reliever Austin Lamay got the save.

The Bison had five different batters record two hits or more. Designated
hitter Ryan Gilbert (Mount Dora, Fla.) led the way with a 3-for-5
performance at the plate. The Bison had five extra-base hits as Winston
Lane (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) had a double and triple and scored two runs.

Senior Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) took the loss on the hill as he
allowed nine runs on 10 hits, walked five and struck two.

Fremont sports

Now that the Girls Basketball team has ended their season, we’re
officially completely into spring sports right now.  All of the Winter
sports athletes, coaches, parents, and supporters deserve a big high five
for their commitment during a long season!  This week, there is a lot of
rain in the forecast but we hope to get a couple of games in.  Then if it
holds up, this weekend, the Varsity Softball team has an exciting matchup
with Geyserville in the second game of the doubleheader, a rematch of last
year’s incredible NCS Championship game.

Athlete of the Week – REZA MOSHER.  The coaches was very impressed with
her rapid improvements on her long distance track times and commitment
with the team so far.  The Athletics Department can vouch that her
performance definitely comes from her wonderful attitude as she always
shows up friendly and says hi to everybody.  This is the kind of
student-athlete that everyone wants to have on their team,
congratulations!
