DeafDigest Sports dedication

DeafDigest Sports dedicates this edition to
Rocky Murray (Fishers, Indiana) that departed
us.

After earning national honors in football
and basketball at Indiana School for the
Deaf, he was recruited to play basketball
at Gallaudet.

He also played football, where he was a hard
charging running back, except for one game
as offensive tackle (more on this later).

At Maryland School for the Deaf, he coached
football one season (1999) and five seasons
of basketball (94-98 through 99-00)

He left Maryland School for the Deaf to take
a teaching position at Indiana SD and
also coached football for two seasons.

While playing football at Gallaudet,
DeafDigest Sports editor remembers one game.
Normally a running back, he started that
game as an offensive tackle, despite never
having played that position before. Injuries
to the offensive line was reason for the
position shift. And ironically enough,
one running back left the game because
of an injury. Coach Rich Pelletier then
had to shift Murray back to his old position.
That meant Murray had to change jerseys
twice (to identify himself as a lineman
and again to identify himself as a
running back!)

hearing TV reporter and deaf photographer

There was a story of Adair “A.J.” Bayatpour, not
deaf, a Milwaukee TV reporter, arrested
for getting into a fight with another reporter
during the Brewers-Cubs baseball game last
night. Do we have deaf members of the media
getting into fights while at work? No.

Michael Pimentel, who is deaf, is one of
the leading sports photographers in the
San Francisco Bay area. Photographers
race each other for better picture-taking
locations. Fights? Pimentel said there are
a lot of pushing around but never fights.

Deaf behave better than hearing!

do not ever joke while getting in airplane

NFL player Trevor Davis was arrested for making
a joke about “explosives” he packed while
getting on the plane to Hawaii.

Why is DeafDigest Sports mentioning it?

Years ago, a deaf player, traveling with his
deaf basketball team for a game against another
deaf club, made a joke – telling the flight
people that the plane will be hijacked to
Cuba.

While the deaf player was not arrested, he
was questioned for hours as the airport
people wanted to make sure it was a joke
and not a threat.

His team, upset and distracted, lost the
game they were expected to win easily.

Bottom line – do not even joke at all!
