deaf coach in all-star basketball game

Jermias Valencia, the Riverside deaf coach.
was selected to coach the IE Sports Net
Riversid team in the all-star game against
San Bernardino.

He may be the first coach in Riverside Deaf
history to coach a post-season all-star game.

The game takes place on April 29, Sunday @3:30 PM.

He siad it is quite a honor for him and for
the school.

He will have an interpreter with him on the
coaching sidelines.

Matt Hamill latest fight

UFC Veteran Matt Hamill defeated Chris Birchler.

The opponent came on strong but ran out of steam,
allowing the much experienced Hamill to come up with
the win. It was Hamill’s wrestling skills that helped
him with these takedowns.

Interestingly enough, it was Hamill’s age (41) that
made the Pennsylvania commission hesitant to certify
him as fit for the match. He had to go through a
series of medical tests to win commission’s approval.

accidental basketball game

it was a big story when one high school team won a baseball
game by the score of 82-0. The coach of the winning team
wanted to play Notre Dame Rey High School but accidentally
scheduled it against a much weaker Notre Dame Cristo Rey
High School (two complely different schools).

It happened years ago during early days of Model Deaf
basketball team. The new coach, from out of town
and not familiar with the local competition,
accidentally scheduled a game against powerhouse
St Anthony’s High School. That team was coached
by John Thompson (before he moved on to Georgetown).

Model was lucky. Thompson, upon arriving at the
gym and seeing how weak Model was, refused to allow
his 1st and 2nd team players to play in the game.
He used his 3rd team, and while St Anthony won
easily, the score could have been worse if
1st and 2nd team players were used.

St Anthony has closed its doors.
