Gallaudet baseball

BB: Gallaudet lands two on All-NEAC baseball teams

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) released
its 2018 baseball all-conference awards on Wednesday and Gallaudet
University junior infielder Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) was named to
the all-conference first team while senior outfielder Kyle Gumm (Dallas,
Texas) was named to the second team. This is Upton’s third consecutive
selection to the all-conference team but his first appearance on the first
team after back-to-back years on the second team.

Upton is tied for first in NCAA Division III for sacrifice flies (8), 13th
in triples (6), 26th in triples per game (0.15) and 45th in batting
average (.426). Upton leads the NEAC in games (39), triples (6) and
sacrifice flies (8). He is third in plate appearances (164), hits (58);
fourth in at bats (136), doubles (12), RBI (41) and fifth in stolen bases
(15) and total bases (85). He was named NEAC Baseball Player of the Week
on May 7 after he went 16-for-18 in a weekend NEAC four-game swing. Upton
was honored on Tuesday by D3baseball.com by being named to the National
Team of the Week at second base.

Gumm is ranked 17th in Division III for stolen bases (28) and stolen bases
per game (0.76). Gumm and Upton helped GU to be ranked fourth in the
country for triples (23) and seventh in triples per game (0.59). Gumm
leads the NEAC in stolen bases (28), second in at bats (140), third in
games (37), fourth in plate appearances (163) and sixth in walks (22). He
was named the NEAC Baseball Player of the Week on March 7.

This selection now gives Gallaudet 25 All-NEAC honors since it joined the
conference in 2010-11. Ten of the 25 selections have been on the first
team and 15 on the second team. The Bison baseball program also has three
Player of the Year, two Pitcher of the Year and two Coach of the Year
award winners in their history in the NEAC.

note:
it says that Upton is tied for first in NCAA Division III for
sacrifice flies (8)

this is not a first for Gallaudet player to be a national leader
in a statistical category. Pitcher Lawson Pair led the NCAA-III
pitchers in highest strike outs per game average in the
1976 season. This is the same Lawson Pair that is the head
football coach at Oklahoma School for the Deaf

Collegiate baseball hitters of the week

the Collegiate Baseball Scouting Network
has listed 9 collegiate hitters of the week
from all collegiate levels, including
NCAA-III. Cameron Upton is one of these
elite hitters of the week. Another tremendous
honor for Gallaudet baseball.

St Mary’s girls track

Yesterday was our Lady Bisons final tune-up before we set off to Fredrick,
Maryland to test our skills against the rest of the ESDAA in our annual
Track and Field championships.  We competed against one of the hardest
teams as of yet in Cardinal O’Hara.  Although you would not see success on
the points sheet, our achievements could be measured by 5 personal records
that surprisingly came from most of our rookies (Tatyanna Bean, Aleyshka
Rivera-Nieves, & Kearah Kelly) .  If we can somehow get all of our girls
peaking at the right time this weekend, we may have a shot at making some
noise.  Please wish our Lady Bisons good luck.

The Bisons hosted the O’Hara Hawks yesterday in their last track meet
before the ESDAA Track and Field Championships.  The weather was perfect
for running and the Bisons managed to “stampede” their way to a win while
closing out their regular season.  Our next meet is the ESDAA Track and
Field Championships on May 11th and 12th in Frederick, Maryland.

Derrick Coleman update

Report: Arizona Cardinals to sign deaf fullback Derrick Coleman

part of newspaper story

No one is sure what the Cardinals’ offense will look like under new
coordinator Mike McCoy, but it apparently will include the use of a
fullback occasionally.

The team has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with fullback Derrick
Coleman, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Coleman’s signing is notable because the Cardinals didn’t use a
traditional fullback under former coach Bruce Arians.

Coleman, regarded as a good special teams player, spent last season with
the Falcons. He was with the Seahawks from 2012-15.

note:

DeafDigest Sports mentioned Coleman few days ago, unaware that he was a
free agent, not signed by Atlanta Falcons for this season.  There are
so many comings and goings that it is not always that possible to
keep track of all NFL players and free agents.
