Valery Rukhledev’s Deaflympics background

As mentioned in DeafDigest Sports a couple of times
Deaflympics president Valery Rukhledev has been
arrested in Russia for embezzlement of deaf agency
funds, and that Kang Chen, Taipei, has been elevated to
acting president.

Rukhledev, in his younger days, was a champion Deaflympics
wrestler, winning Freestyle and Greco-Roman gold medals
six times between 1969 and 1977.

A Moscow Court has ruled that he will be kept under house
arrest until July 23.

random deafsports thoughts

If a USA Deaflympics official asks a hearing coach
(with no knowledge of ASL) to try to learn some
signs, the hearing coach should NEVER laugh and think
it is funny.

Hearing wrestling coach Mark Faller was supposed to coach
the USA wrestlers in the 1989 Deaflympics. He was advisd
to learn some signs, but he laughed very hard.

DeafDigest Sports editor witnessed it and couldn’t
believe that the coach thought it was just a joke!

As a result, he was replaced as the head wrestling
coach.

Faller was a long time wrestling coach at Franklin &
Marshall University.
