deaf pitcher finally drafted

Sherrod sees return to A&M pay off as he’s taken in 7th round

part of newspaper story

Most of the time, if a college junior is selected in the Major League
Baseball draft, he chooses to forego his senior season and sign with the
pro team. As a senior, he does not have as much leverage in contract
negotiations since he cannot threaten to return to school.

A year ago, though, Texas A&M pitcher Cason Sherrod surprised a few people
by choosing to return to Aggieland after being selected in the 12th round
by the Kansas City Royals. A long reliever, it did not seem like the
6-foot-4, 215-pound right hander could improve his stock too much as a
senior either, so the decision was a bit of a shocker.

However, it turns out he made the right move.

On Tuesday, the Miami Marlins selected Sherrod in the 2018 MLB Draft in
the seventh round with the No. 207 overall selection. The slot value for
the contract is $210, 200.

Though he had a couple rough outings, Sherrod was one of the most
consistent arms for Texas A&M each of the past two seasons. As a senior in
2018, he finished 5-2 with a 3.98 ERA. He appeared in 25 games, through 40
2/3 innings. He finished with 40 strikeouts as opponents hit .260 off of
him.

A year ago, Sherrod was huge in A&M’s run to the College World Series. He
finished his junior season with a 4-1 record, a 2.89 ERA, four saves and
an opponent batting average of .203. He also had 38 strikeouts in 43 2/3
innings.

Sherrod came to A&M from Dallas W.T. White. He saw action in three games
as a freshman in 2015 before pitching in 16 games as a sophomore the next
year. Born legally deaf, he is active off the field in working with the
deaf community and others with disabilities.

random deafsports thoughts

Congrats, Cason Sherrod for improving on his draft ranking.

He was 12th round draft choice last year and chose to return
to Texas A&M.

This time around, he improved to a 7th round draft choice.

He gave up a homerun in a relief appearance last week. All
top pitchers give up their share of homeruns, so hope he
will shake off that homer!

more on deaf pitcher Yuya Ishii

a baseball fan responded to DeafDigest Sports editor
regarding deaf Japanese pitcher’s stats this season.

As of yesterday, he has pitched 18 games, but
totalling only 15.2 innings, and his ERA is
not very good – 5.74, and his strike out/
walks ratio, again not too good – 11 strike outs
but 10 walks.

Said the fan:
He is definitely playing in Hokkaido’s farm team as a reliever
this season. With his stats and age (36) I wouldn’t expect him
to be called up to Hokkaido’s top team anytime soon, though.
On the bright side he did help the Fighters win the Japanese
Series championship in 2016.
