random deafsports thoughts

from time to time DeafDigest Sports thinks of past
deaf elite athletes. Some of them made it big;
some don’t. Many of them have faded away from
the spotlight, and often we don’t hear from them
again.

An example is Ryan Ketchner, who was ever so close
to making it in the majors as a pitcher but never
made it. Arm ailments derailed his major league
dream. He made a comeback in independent ball but
could’t make it.

upcoming college baseball player

Anthony Viggiano

new freshman

baseball

Bloomsburg University (PA -NCAA-II)

……………………………………………..

a deaf coach

Jeff Goodwin, who is deaf is a football and basketball
coach at Houghton Lake Community Schools in Michigan.

He functions as a hearing person, and does not use ASL.

…………………………………………….

deaf pitcher with independent minor league team

Dmitri Kourtis

relief pitcher

he debuted last season with Lincoln Salt Dogs
and while pitching for them again this season,
he is now pitching for the Sioux Falls Canaries
in the same American Association league.

With both teams, he has a combined record of
2-2 won/lost record, 19 games pitched, 38.2
innings pitched, mostly in relief, but with
three starts. Combined ERA is 4.66

Apparently he is regarded as a journeyman
pitcher, available to pitch for any team
on basis of need (injuries to regular
pitchers).
