Texas volleyball

part of newpaper story

AUSTIN — The Rudder volleyball team won a game and lost two in pool play
Thursday at the Jason Landers Invitational in Austin.

Rudder defeated the Texas School for the Deaf 25-16, 25-7, but lost to
Midlothian 25-16, 25-14, and Conroe 25-19, 20-25, 25-19.

Texas football

from a tweet

I work across from the Texas School for the Deaf and watching their
football team practice is cool because they use a big bass drum
instead of a whistle

note:
not every deaf football team uses the drum. Gallaudet has
stopped using the drum to set up offensive cadence during
games – because it would prevent the quarterback from calling
audibles! A past Gallaudet quarterback convinced the coach
to forget the drum for that reason and the coach agreed.

soccer scores in Africa

Black Wonders suffer first defeat at West Africa Deaf Football tourney«

Ghana’s hearing-impaired national football team, Black Wonders on
Thursday lost 1-2 to Mali in their final Group B game at the ongoing West
Africa Deaf Football tournament in Lome, Togo.

Despite the loss, the Ghanaians have still qualified for the
quarter-finals having earlier beaten Benin 9-0 a in their opening game on
Monday.

The Black Wonders also drew 1-1 with Nigeria on Wednesday, which earned
them a slot in the quarter-finals at the six-nation tourney.

In their opening match, Nana Amoako and Eric Nyame recorded a hat-trick
each before Richard Abaka, Gayheart clayman, Ghansah Joseph scored a goal
each to make it 9-0 for Ghana.

The Ghanaians are looking forward to defending the trophy they won two
years ago when Ghana hosted the sub-regional competition which brings
together eight other West African nations.

Meanwhile, hosts Togo were beaten 3-0 by Mali in the Group A opening game.

Ninja finals

GLEN ELLYN – As someone who is deaf, Glen Ellyn resident Kyle Schulze
has had to overcome his share of challenges.

The 2008 Glenbard West High School graduate is not afraid of challenges,
as he showed by making it to the national finals round on the television
show “American Ninja Warrior.” The NBC show follows competitors as they
tackle a series of obstacle courses in both city qualifying and city
finals rounds across the country.

equestrian rider

international show-jumping classes at the Dublin Horse Show at the RDS.

Jamie Barge, Adrienne Sternlicht, Laura Kraut and Lucy Deslauriers will be
defending the title won by another all-female American team last year.
They could prove tough nuts to crack. Barge (32) is quite the phenomenon
as she has made it to the very top of the sport despite a serious hearing
impairment. She had a brilliant run with her grey horse Luebbo at the
World Cup final in Paris in April, where the crowd threw their hands in
the air every time she jumped a clear round.

random deafsports thoughts

over the years, we have had deaf athletic organizations
run by non-deaf people.

DeafDigest Sports has no problem with non-deaf people operating
the deaf sports organizations.

The problem is when non-deaf people push away deaf people that
wish to get involved or to give input on how to make these
organizations more responsive to the needs of deaf athletes.

On a personal basis, DeafDigest Sports editor, as a young man
many years ago, clashed with these non-deaf people that would
not listen to the deaf and insist that their ideas are the ones that
is best for the deaf!
