Volleyball: California School for Deaf rolling toward league title

North Coast Section

The dominant leader in the Bay Counties General League is California
School for the Deaf.

The Eagles from Fremont are 10-0 with 10 sweeps, comfortably ahead of Holy
Names at 7-3. Coach Karina Pedersen’s Eagles are led by senior Jada
Dawson with 143 kills and 151 digs in 22 games. Jade Dawson does most of
the setting, collecting 295 assists, along with 87 kills and 131 digs.
Malia Zornoza adds to the mix with 116 kills, 139 digs, and 68 assists.

The Eagles are not just feasting on mediocre competition. Their 16-6
overall record includes matches such as a narrow 25-23, 28-30, 14-16
defeat to a strong St. Joseph Notre Dame team, a five-set victory over
College Prep of Oakland and a close call against Bay Valley Athletic
League leader Liberty, 25-16, 24-26, 15-11.

note:
this shows how extremely competitive the recently-held National
Spike Out was. Participating schools may bring their winning
local records into the competition, yet only one school can
emerge as champions (Maryland SD)

St. Vincent strikes quickly to beat California School for the Deaf.

ARGUS-COURIER STAFF | October 9, 2018, 6:33PM | Updated 9 hours ago.
St. Vincent High School’s Mustangs scored twice within 13 seconds in the
second quarter to defeat California School for the Deaf, 20-14, on its
home turf in Fremont on Saturday afternoon.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Mustangs, improved
their record to 5-3 for the season and assured them of a winning record in
Trent Herzog’s first year as head coach. The Mustangs have an unwanted
bye this week as their planned opponent, Madison Park Academy of Oakland,
canceled its season.

The loss was just the second of the season for CSD, opposed to five wins.

St. Vincent was clinging to a 7-6 lead when Diego Reyes recovered a fumble
at the CSD 18-yard line. It was one of five turnovers forced by the CSD
defense.

On the first play following the fumble, St. Vincent reversed to wide
receiver Marcus Matthias, who went the 18 yards for the score.

On CSD’s first play following the kickoff, defensive tackle Connor
Yowell sacked the quarterback, Reyes forced a fumble and sophomore
defensive tackle Andrew Pech picked it up and raced 36 yards for another
Mustang touchdown
