Alabama School for the Deaf football team pushes past limits
while making school history

TALLADEGA, Ala. (WIAT) — The Alabama School for the Deaf has fielded a
football team for 126 years, claiming 15 league championships and six
national championships. But this season, the Silent Warriors are trying
something extraordinary. For the first time ever they are playing with the
Alabama School for the Blind.

“The only question I asked myself was ‘how was I going to be able to
communicate?’,” said School for the blind senior Geordan Carter. “Me
being visually impaired the other guys being hearing impaired.”

The idea came from the head coach, Paul Kulick. He saw one major flaw in
his team.

“I’m looking at my boys and we didn’t have any size,” said Kulick.
“I’m looking at ASB, they had bigger players. I should have them come
over here and play for us.”

note:
DeafDigest Sports editor watched a football game between
Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind at Hampton (not Staunton)
and North Carolina School for the Deaf way back in the
late eighties. Two or three players on the Hampton team
were blind – and in fact, one of them intercepted a pass!
Actually the pass was batted down on the line of scrimmage
and the ball fell into the blind player’s hands.

Missouri School for the Deaf Middle School Basketball Results

On Tuesday November 6th, your middle school Missouri School for the Deaf
Eagles had a tough game against St. Brendan’s in Mexico, MO. Our athletes
played their hearts out to a very strong opponent, but lost 24-9.
Highlights of the game include:

-Hailey Luper with the first points of the year early in the first half.
-Brayden Falder added 4 points with two beautiful shots.
-Nina Beamish strongly defended the other team and had several
steals/rebounds.
-Allen Cass unfortunately fouled out early in the 4th quarter, but added 2
points for us.
-Myia Dandle and Tracy Austin showed their tough spirit by playing some
aggressive defense and never giving up.

It was the first game EVER for Christina Bobo, Annabelle Warwick, and
Isabella Davis and they all did an excellent job hustling and keeping up
with the older students. Our next game is on Tuesday November 13th against
KCA at home! Come out and support your young Eagles!

random deafsports thoughts

At Gallaudet there is a first year athlete who formerly
attended NTID. While attending NTID classes he never
went out for sports, but after transferring to Gallaudet,
he immediately joined an athletic team.

DeafDigest Sports editor finds this interesting.
