Texas girls’ basketball

We played at the Brentwood Bestpack Invitational tournament this past
weekend and our girls played well considering most of them only had four
practices after volleyball season ended.  We opened against Brentwood and
had a nail-biter, winning in overtime 38-36.  (Brentwood is the same team
we lost to in the Final Four last year)  The second game we faced a solid
Rosehill Christian (5-1) team and beat them 50-20.  In the championship
game, we played against Boerne Geneva (5-1) and won 41-9.  Our defense was
a highlight of the tournament, getting plenty of recognition from other
coaches.

Brentwood Bestpack Invitational
TSD d. Brentwood, 38-36 OT
TSD d. Rosehill, 50-20
TSD d. Geneva, 41-9

Our record is 4-0 as we start Thanksgiving break and will resume play with
a game against Regents on November 29th.

GU picks up first win of season, Hudson named to all-tournament team

BOSTON – Junior guard Kendall Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) posted career
numbers here Sunday in the Emmanuel College Tip Off Classic consolation
game to lead the Gallaudet University women’s basketball team to its first
win of the 2018-19 season. The Bison defeated Pine Manor College by 48
points, 89-41, as Hudson scored 27 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and made
six steals. For her efforts, Hudson was named to the all-tournament team.

Gallaudet (1-2) scored the game’s first eight points and never looked
back. The Bison outscored the winless Gators 26-5 in the second quarter
and led 41-11 at the half.

GU put the game away in the second half as it scored 48 additional points,
with 30 coming in the fourth quarter, to earn the team’s first win of the
season.

Senior guard/forward Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) poured in 23 points
as she made 10 of 14 shots from the floor to go with nine rebounds, nine
assists and three steals as she just missed out on a triple-double. Senior
guard Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded a double-double with 17 points
and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and three steal

Bison tangle with Cardinals in Battle of D.C. & Maryland consolation game

WASHINGTON – The second day of the Battle of D.C. & Maryland Tournament
came to a close here Sunday in the Field House as a champion was crowned
and an all-tournament team announced.

Gallaudet University stumbled against The Catholic University of America
in the men’s basketball consolation game as the Bison (0-4) lost, 96-69,
to the Cardinals (1-2). GU senior forward Jamal Garner (Jacksonville,
Ill.) led the team in rebounds (seven) and scored six points as he was
selected to the all-tournament team.

The Bison had four scorers reach double figures as each player drained two
3-pointers. Junior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) led the way
with 14 points followed by fellow junior guard Trace Martin (Shingle
Springs, Calif.) with 13 and freshmen guards Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) and
Dylan Sicoli (Austin, Texas) netted 10 points each.

random deafsports thoughts

In the good old days of American Athletic Association
Basketball (AAAD) tournaments, competing coaches
would look for promising players that just graduated
from deaf schools. The Washington, DC coach thought
he found such a promising player (that didn’t go to
Gallaudet).

The coach helped him find a job and an apartment
in the Washington, DC area in exchange for playing
for his club team.

On the first day of club basketball practice, everyone
realized the new player was not as good as he was
being “advertised” – and was stuck (at least for one
year) the promised job and the promised apartment!

Chasing Fools’ Gold? Yes!
