Florida girls’ basketball

November 29 vs First Coast Christian Middle School

Score: FSDB 16, FCC 14

First game for our middle school girls and they really worked hard. We
were leading until third quarter falling behind, 12 to 14. We kept our
composure and were able to score 4 points and held on to the buzzer in
last 1 ½ minutes. Kayla, 6th grade,  had
10 points while Kendall (8th grade) Suheily (8th grade), and Ivabelle (6th
grade) had 2 points each. All girls got a chance to play in this game.
Mighty proud of our girls!

Our next game is this Monday against Providence at 5 PM.

Kansas boys’ basketball

On Thursday, November 29 at 6:00 PM, Kansas School for the Deaf played
their second basketball game of the season.  They played against Alta
Vista, who had already played three games in the Great Plains Athletics
Conference (GPAC).  During the practice the day prior to the game, the
boys
did a great job preparing for the competition.  KSD beat Alta Vista, 61 to
38! Coach Ward was happy that the boys tasted their first victory of the
season.  Presently, KSD has 1 win and 1 loss.

This weekend, the KSD Boys will travel to Iowa School for the Deaf for the
Neesam Basketball Classic 2018 to play against Iowa, Wisconsin, and
Minnesota. It will be a big test for our KSD Boys. The key is to get a
good
seeding for the GPSD Boys’ Basketball Tourney at Minnesota State Academy
for the Deaf in February. Last year, our KSD Boys took second Place in the
GPSD Basketball Tourney.

Kentucky boys’ basketball

part of newspaper story

KSD coach enters 12th year anticipating struggles, planning to help young
team

Mike Yance talks about getting out, but he isn’t likely to leave the
sideline any time soon.

Another basketball season is beginning at Kentucky School for the Deaf,
and it probably won’t be a good one. And Yance, who is starting his 12th
season as coach of the school’s boys team, is frustrated and fired up at
the same time.

On one hand, he is struggling to stay motivated and to motivate his
players as a stretch of lean seasons is starting to grow. KSD has gone
3-23 over the last two seasons and will put a young team on the floor this
season.

“I want to quit, but my wife said no, we need the money,” Yance joked,
speaking through an interpreter.

On the other hand, he looks forward to seeing what his young team can do
as the season unfolds and beyond this year.

“I look forward to this team going up against the other deaf schools and
challenging the other teams,” he said.

That starts this afternoon, when the Colonels open their season against
Ohio School for the Deaf in the KSD Basketball Kick-Off Classic. KSD was
scheduled to open its season Thursday against Burgin, but the game was
changed to a junior varsity game. It will play as many as four games over
the next two days in the Kick-Off Classic, a multi-team event for boys and
girls teams at Thomas Hall.

Game Report- November 30th, 2018. Ohio school for the Deaf at Kentucky
School for the Deaf

KSD- 14 2 5 5- 26
OSD- 16 17 14 18-65

KSD (0-1) Ward 7, Dorn 2, Fox 9, Gilbert 3, Collins 3, Haynes 2

OSD- Hopkins 17, Borges 22, Greene 2, Ali 4, James 3, Bawman 17

It was KSD first game of the season. KSD got off to a good start hitting
four triples to a 14-12 lead before turnovers caught up and got into foul
trouble already before halftime. Lack of rebounding and passing hurt the
team. Alex Fox and Eric Gilbert both freshman scored their first Varsity
points. The team committed 51 turnovers which prevented their chance to
catch up. Very inexperienced team.

random deafsports thoughts

A trend worries DeafDigest Sports editor; some schools
just don’t have enough players to have basketball teams.

No need to elaborate, but it is worrisome.
