random deafsports talk

The Willigan Wrestling tournament is coming up soon.

Who was Marty Willigan?

He was a long time wrestling coach at Gallaudet.

He is deaf and wrestled on the NCAA-I level at Hofstra
University. As a senior he finished runner ups at the
NCAA national tournament, losing in the finals to the
legendary Dan Gable.

Willigan was urged by his coach to wrestle at a lower
weight level to avoid facing Gable and to possibly win a
national championship for himself. He refused, wanting the
challenge of defeating Gable!
