a dedication

DeafDigest Sports dedicates this edition to John Bird Perry
that departed us.

A Deaf Basketball Lifer would perfectly describe him.

He was a high school basketball star in Northern Virginia
but was not recruited by any of these 4-year colleges;
a few 2-year colleges recruited him, but he decided to
enroll at Gallaudet despite not knowing sign language.

He knew Cued Speech, though. He has become quite fluent
with ASL.

He fell in love with Gallaudet and played four seasons
of basketball as a valued 6th man, first player coming
off the bench. His trademark is to look first for the open
man to pass the ball to. A ball hog, he wasn’t!

Over the years he continued his involvement with basketball
as a long time assistant Gallaudet basketball coach and with
deaf adult club teams in the Washington. DC area.

When not busy with basketball, he was a full time contractor
with the Department of State, working on the agency computers.

We will miss you, John!

RISD Girls Basketball

Our Girls’ Rooster Basketball team traveled to Moses Brown School to play
our first game of the 2019 year – this was the first matchup between the
two schools for a long time. Both teams had their defensive games on
lockdown through most of the first half. Our girls’ had a number of
opportunities to convert points, but the ball just couldn’t find the
bottom
of the net.

Moses Brown would hold a 6-2 halftime lead — it was in the second half
that we started to score more points and create more looks for ourselves
on
offense. But at the same time, we also committed more turnovers, which
gave
Moses Brown easy fast break points. This was a good learning experience
for
our team’s first game in nearly a month.

RISD – 2   10  – 12
MB –    6   14  – 20

Yasmin S. – 10 Points
Lillian K. – 2 Points, 16 Rebounds

RISD Girls Basketball Record: 4-5
Next Game: Wednesday, January 16 @ NYSD-Fanwood (3:30 P.M.)

RISD Boys Basketball

Our Boys’ Basketball team traveled to Moses Brown to play on their rubber
home floor – which was a first for some of our students. They were
probably
one of the tallest teams that we’ve faced and our boys struggled to
convert
passes against their quick defensive scheme. But we were able to keep up
with them on the scoreboard as Moses Brown only had a 18-14 halftime lead.

In the second half, Moses Brown was able to convert more of their
defense-created turnovers into fast-break points and built a stronger lead
that we kept carving away at, but was never able to erase the deficit.
Moses Brown ended the game on top, 46-33.

RISD – 14  19  – 33
MBS –  18  28  – 46

Jayden E. – 13 Points
Juan F. – 10 Points
Tim J. – 8 Points

RISD Boys Basketball Record: 4-6
Next Game: Wednesday, January 16 @ NYSD-Fanwood (5:00 P.M.)

Rochester Girls

The wildcats were back in action on Monday with an away game at St. John
Bosco.  Having come off the two games this weekend we were not sure what
to
expect from the team.  Their gym is rather small and that impacted our
transition game but we found other ways to score.  Our offense ran well
and
the girls played good defense to secure the victory, 46-34.  the team was
led by McKenna Girod with 18 points and Courtney Gentzke  with 13 points
on
the day.  Cori Moquette had a nice game chipping in 10 points.  We are
back
in action tomorrow at 4:30.

Record: 10-2

Park. The team was without Nick Barrus and Adnan Abdi due to injuries.
Park came out to a fast start and the Bisons were unable to make up any

rest up and come back healthy and ready to go for the final push towards
the end of the season. Isa Habeeb led the team with 18 points, Michael
Norris had 11 points, Kassim Kassim had 4 points, Ethan Antone and Ryan
Brzezinski each had 2 points for the Bisons. Givon Blackwell provided the
Bisons with hard work on both ends of the court. Michael Norris recorded a
double-double by scoring 11 points and bringing down a solid 16 rebounds
for the team. The teams next game is Thursday, January 31 at Falk at 5:30
pm.

for them. They ended up losing to a tough Gow team. Nick Barrus led the

#1
DeafDigest Sports has dedicated this edition to
John Bird Perry that departed us.

He served as assistant coach with the Gallaudet men’s
basketball team for 15 years, and was looking forward
to this season, which would be his 16th season.

We do not find too many assistant coaches, in all sports,
that would serve for so many years!

#2
John Bird Perry had a secret that not too many people knew about.

His secret – he loved British soccer and would spend his Saturdays
watching the Premier League contests on TV – these famed British teams
such as Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, etc.

When these British teams came to USA to play some pre-season games he
would take his sons with him and drive few hours to watch these
games.
