V Girls

NMSD  19

ToHajiilee 65

We lost a tough game yesterday versus To’Hajiilee with a final score of
19-65. The girls played hard, and we will continue to invest in practices
and upcoming games to prepare us for the District Tournament and GPSD
Tournament. We are looking forward to next week’s games. As always, we
appreciate your ongoing support!

V Boys
NMSD 81
ToHajiilee 49

The final score was 81-49,we beat To’Hajiilee High School. I thought
offensively it was our best game offensively execution-wise since the
basketball season started. Our teams didn’t do well on defense tonight,
and we had trouble scoring with the pressure of their man-man defense. We
found a way to score in the 3rd quarter and we were able to come back with
confidence and get the win.

Senior Deven Thompson dropped 35 points and 17 rebounds while Junior Luis
Villalobos dropped 21 points and 8 rebounds. Freshman Bruce Brewer Jr had
19 points and 5 assists. Our 8th grader, Kieran Vollmar had 4 points and 4
rebounds in just 3 minutes of playing time.

Overall Record 12-5

Prior Events 1/30/19

V Girls

NMSD  40

TECS   33

Our girls basketball team played a great game last night! We won 40-33. We
played a great defense, and played hard till the very end. Mya Malone
scored 26 points and had 12 rebounds. Lindsay Hand and Victoria Baca both
scored 7 points. We hope to see the girls continue to improve every game.
We are very proud of them. If you see any of our players today, be sure to
congratulate them for a great win!

V Boys
NMSD  47
TECS 32

NMSD boys basketball defeated TECS high school with a final score of
47-32. This is our 13th win of the basketball season. They played their
hearts out on the court without two starters. Coach Leo told all boys the
defense will win if they do a great job in the transition defense. They
did a great job with man to man including secondary defenders (those not
covering the ball or the deep threat).  They read and reacted to where the
offensive threat was most obvious and  COMMUNICATION IS KEY during
defensive conversion.

Senior Deven Thompson dropped 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks while
Freshman Bruce Brewer Jr. had 15 points, 8 assists and 5 steals. Senior
Jacob Stevens excelled with 18 rebounds!

The next home game is vs Jemez Valley HS on the 5th of February at 6:30PM.

Overall record:   13-5

District  record:  0-0

Jacob Cross led the team with 17 points, 17 rebounds, and 8 assists. Peter
Dammer helped with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals. Aquil Roane
chipped in with 10 points, 5 steals, and 5 blocks. It is overall an
excellence defense teamwork.

Today, 2/4/19, New Jersey School for the Deaf came to our last home game
of the season. Although the Lady Panthers only had 5 players, they
didn’t let that get in the way of playing hard. Throughout all 4

offense and defense. With hard work and team work, the Lady Panthers were
able to bring home another win! In the win, Gia was the high scorer with
24 points and 5 steals. Natalya had another double double with 14 points

St Mary’s boys basketball

The Bison’s took on Falk Monday afternoon for the second meeting between
the two teams. The Bison’s were hanging in the game despite their sloppy
play and turning the ball over 17 times in the first half. The team came
out fast in the 3rd quarter and won that quarter easily, but were unable
to keep the momentum going and catch Falk. Overall the team improved from
the last time they played Falk. Nick Barrus led the team with 16 points,
followed by Isa Habeeb with 11 points, Michael Norris had 9 points, Kassim
Kassim 6 points and Adnan Abdi with 3 points. Michael Norris led the team

note:

been ranked #1 in the state (private schools). Of course
the rankings change week to week.  Texas has six private
school classes, from 6A (highest) to 1A (lowest), and Texas
Deaf is in the 4A classification, two notches below from the top.

random deafsports thoughts

the ESDAA-I girls’ basketball tournamament, hosted by
Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, made this
announcement:

all games will be live-streamed (FREE)

there were grumblings from fans hoping to watch other
tournaments that they had to pay for streaming.

Keep in mind hosting a regional tournament is
very expensive. This the reason why some hosts
hope to recoup costs by charging for live streaming.

But for other schools, it is public service.

Always a sticky situation
