Gallaudet women’s basketball update

Gallaudet’s Hannah Neild named Jostens Trophy finalist

SALEM, Va. – Gallaudet University women’s basketball guard/forward Hannah
Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) was named a finalist for the 2019 Jostens Trophy
announced Friday by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).

The Jostens Trophy is awarded to the outstanding NCAA Division III men’s
and women’s basketball players who excel on the court, in the classroom,
and in the community. This season marks the 22nd presentation of the
awards, with the inaugural trophies bestowed in 1998.

Neild is one of 10 women’s finalists and the first Jostens Trophy finalist
in Gallaudet history. The senior was named the 2018-19 North Eastern
Athletic Conference (NEAC) Player of the Year and made a second straight
appearance on the all-conference first team. She is second in NCAA
Division III in points scored (649) and third in points per game (25.0).

note:
This announcement is a puzzler – Old Dominion Athletic Conference,
which is a strong conference consisting of such members as
Bridgewater, Emory & Henry, Randolph-Macon, etc. It is
based in the southern states

Gallaudet is a member of the North Eastern Athletic Conference
which is based in the northern states; Gallaudet is the most
southermost member of that conference.

Oh, well.

Texas girls’ basketball

part of newspaper story:

Texas School for the Deaf loses in state semi-finals

The Texas School for the Deaf lost for the first time this season.

Things didn’t go as well for the Texas School for the Deaf.

TSD had been undefeated this season, but fell behind Houston Lutheran
North in the first half and couldn’t catch up. The final score was 55-52.

note:
it is VERY difficult for a team, in any sport, to go undefeated
in a season. Still, a remarkable season for Texas girls.

random deafsports thoughts

There was a story of two parents arrested for fighting
after a basketball game.

It was not a college basketball game. It was not a
high school basketball game.

It was a 4th grade basketball game.

DeafDigest Sports editor has mentioned it several
times in the past and is mentioning it again now.

A deaf man was a baseball umpire.

After the game, a coach was angry at the deaf umpire
and got into a fight with him. It didn’t matter to
the coach that the deaf umpire was big and looked
like a college football defensive lineman.

The deaf umpire quit, never again umpiring
baseball games again.

It was just a Little League game.

Sam McLarty was drafted by a top-level Australian Football League
in 2016. But after two seasons, the major league team did not
renew his contact.

He has signed to play for North Ringwood, a minor league team in
the Australian Football League circuit.
