GU strikes first against Franklin & Marshall

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University got on the scoreboard first here
Saturday in a non-conference baseball game against Franklin & Marshall
College at a cold and breezy Hoy Field. The host Bison plated three runs
in the bottom of the first but the lead vanished in the third inning as
the Diplomats took a 4-3 lead en route to a 21-6 win.

Gallaudet (2-4) struck in the bottom of the first when junior catcher Matt
Scuderi (Jensen Beach, Fla.) doubled to right field to plate senior first
baseman Ryan Gilbert (Mount Dora, Fla.). Two batters later, sophomore
Austin Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas) singled up the middle to bring home
senior Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) and Scuderi as GU led 3-0.

part of newspaper story

New Mexico School for the Deaf 53, Walatowa 52

The Roadrunners completed their second straight season sweeping both the
district regular-season and tournament title, but had to withstand a
determined Cougars team in the 7-1A championship in Larson Gymnasium.

The win allowed NMSD to set a school record for wins as it improved to
21-5.

It was a close one, Roadrunners head coach Letty Perez wrote in a text
message. Many good opportunities were missed and both teams had had foul
trouble.

Deven Thompson had a double-double with 22 points and 20 rebounds, and
Bruce Brewer Jr. added 13 points and collected five steals.

note:
story says “completed season” – not sure if season is over or if
state tournament awaits them?

random deafsports thoughts

It was always assumed that Gallaudet varsity never played
against NTID club in any sport, because of NCAA rules
not allowing NTID to field its own intercollegiate
varsity athletic programs.

Well, one time it did.

Gallaudet fielded varsity volleyball programs between
1974 and 1988, and again few years ago for one varsity
season.

In the 1983 volleyball season, Gallaudet faced NTID
club team.

Gallaudet won 3-0.

Never again would both teams play in volleyball.
