The Florida girls won the Mason-Dixon basketball tournament,
the nation’s biggest deaf regional tournament. They went
20-6, defeating a good number of strong hearing local
teams.

Gallaudet roars into 2019 season with sweep of Lions

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University began its 2019 season on a cold and
blustery day at the GU Softball Complex as the Bison swept a
non-conference doubleheader against overmatched Lincoln (Pa.) University.

Gallaudet (2-0) ran all over Lincoln (0-2) en route to 9-1 and 22-4
victories in five innings before a handful of fans that braved the frigid
temperatures.

Game 1: Gallaudet 9, Lincoln 1 (F/5)
Senior Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) threw a complete game
two-hitter as she allowed one unearned run, walked one and struck out
eight in five innings of work. GU scored three times in the first inning
and put the game away with a five-run fourth inning.

Senior shortstop Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) doubled to right field to
drive in two runs in the five-run fourth. Neild finished the game 2-for-3
with three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Kendall Hudson (Blissfield,
Mich.) scored three times in her Bison debut. GU had six different batters
with a hit or more.

Bison run wild on McDaniel

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University and McDaniel College ran their way into
the NCAA record book on a cold and blustery Tuesday afternoon at Hoy
Field. The two teams combined to swipe a combined 23 stolen bases, the
most by two NCAA Division III programs this season and second-most
all-time.

McDaniel (1-4) picked up its first win of the 2019 season as the Green
Terror scored seven times after it trailed Gallaudet (2-6) by two runs,
5-3, heading into the sixth inning.

The game was called due to darkness as it went into the bottom of the
ninth inning.

Firat Kaya, who is deaf, plays professional soccer
for a Tier 2 team in Turkey.

He becomes the first deaf athlete to play a professional
sport in Turkey.

He previously played in Germany’s low level pro soccer league
