Bison sweep Southern Vermont for the first and final time

FORT MYERS, Fla. – It was a bittersweet day for the Gallaudet University
baseball team here Thursday as it swept Southern Vermont College, 9-8 and
9-7, in a non-conference doubleheader at the Lee County Player Development
Complex. The wins were the first and last for the Bison against Southern
Vermont, who will shut down its school at the end of this semester due to
financial hardship. Gallaudet (7-11) entered today’s doubleheader 0-4
all-time against the Mountaineers (3-6-1).

note:
always sad when an opposing college closes doors due to financial
reasons. It happened to Mt Ida two years ago, an opponent in
Gallaudet’s Eastern Collegiate Football Conference

random deafsports thoughts

There was a story in today’s newspapers about deaf students
at hearing colleges struggling to find classroom interpreters
at the last minute.

For quite a few deaf athletes that play on hearing college
teams, a big consideration is the availablilty of interpreters
at these hearing colleges.

For one football players he chose one NCAA-I college over
another NCAA-I college for that reason. It was a choice
between sitting on the bench and getting interpeters
easily as opposed to playing a lot and struggling with
interpreters.

Needless to say, he sat on the bench four full seasons,
rarely playing at all!
