a past deaf Toughman fighter

part of newspaper story

Hollis later rounded out his athletic resume with a year-long boxing
stint, winning 20 straight bouts to qualify for the Toughman Contest. The
lightweight advanced all the way to the final and was one round away from
taking the state title when the top-seeded fighter, who was deaf, didn’t
hear the second-round bell and got in a punch after Hollis had dropped his
gloves. The blow opened up Hollis’s eye and, despite the underdog’s pleas,
forced the referee to call the fight.

note:
this fight took place in Alabama in the late seventies. Do not know
who that deaf fighter was but he was the state champion, even if
fans thought he didn’t deserve it.

random deafsports thoughts

See above story. How often is it that in a contact sport
(fighting, wrestling, football, rugby, etc, a deaf athlete
would hit a hearing athlete, not hearing the whistle
to stop play!
