Open Letter to Gallaudet Bison community about Athletics Fundraiser

Dear Gallaudet Community,

As the proverb says: “It takes a village to raise a child.”

As a Gallaudet alum or proud supporter, you are an integral part of our
#GUBison program. Thank you for your unconditional care to Gallaudet
Athletics in the past. This summer, we have started our first
department-wide fundraiser and your support to our student-athletes will
help offset the cost of travel, equipment, game calendar and off-the-court
activities.

In the past year, over 250 Gallaudet Bison student-athletes, participated
in 5,000+ hours of practice, 230+ games, traveled 50,000+ miles and still
finished the year with a 2.98 cumulative grade point average (GPA). Also,
51 student-athletes earned 2018-19 North Eastern Athletic Conference
(NEAC) Scholar-Athlete honors. Each student-athlete was required to
accumulate a 3.4 or higher GPA for the fall and spring semesters combined.

The goal of this campaign is $56,000 until this September. We are already
halfway there but we still have ground to cover and you can help us reach
our goal. We are a tax-exempt organization under IRC 501(c)(3) and
contributions are tax deductible as donors will receive a tax receipt
moments after making their gift. Inability to generate revenue streams,
could lead to cutting down on travel, equipment, games to name a few
examples. Your support is key!

Elina Rubinshteyn, a rising junior on the GU women’s volleyball team,
shared with our community this past spring during NCAA Division III Week
what it means to be a student-athlete at Gallaudet University.

“I am definitely grateful that I am part of the Gallaudet University
women’s volleyball team. I am grateful because I have teammates that
communicate in the same language, no barriers. I am honored to play for
the only Deaf University in the world,” said Rubinshteyn.

Your support will not only help make the lives of our student-athletes,
like Elina’s better, but also help shape our community as a whole. When
programs are inspired, students have a higher chance to stay in school and
receive a diploma, go on to receive a higher education and, in the end,
will be able to contribute to our community in many positive ways.

Become a #GUBison supporter now and jump right in and donate to the
campaign at https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/GUBison/ or text GUBISON to
71777. You can donate to the entire athletics department or select a team
to support. It’s your choice and every donation matters. Thank you and Go
Bison!

Respectfully,

Victor Mansure
Director of Athletics
Gallaudet University

random deafsports thoughts

DeafDigest Sports editor never forgot the tall, tall,
tall 1965 Chicago Deaf Club basketball team.

They went all out and recruited the best deaf adult
players from everywhere in USA – several players in the
6’6, 6’7 height range; several past Gallaudet basketball
greats, etc. The buzz among deaf basketball fans was that
Chicago would win it all at the nationals.

They traveled to Gallaudet to play a game against District
of Columbia deaf club. The gym was jam-packed, all expecting
Chicago to win in a laughter against the DC team that had
coaching and morale issues.

Washington won very easily against this star-studded
Chicago team.

And Washington, not Chicago was the one that won the
national championship. DC’s 5’9 Jim Macfadden
held a 6’7 Chicago player to ZERO points!

Why is DeafDigest Sports editor bringing this up?

A big hint – Brooklyn Nets winning the free agent
market with the 3 hottest free agents available.

Will they win the 2020 NBA championship “easily”?

Just stay tuned.
