Michigan volleyball

Michigan School for the Deaf’s varsity volleyball team had their first and
only game of the 2019 season on 9/17/19. MSD played played last year’s
league champs,
Merritt Academy. MSD has an extremely young team, with four 6th graders.
The girls wanted to play one game to gain experience. They were more
excited than nervous
and they had smiles on their faces the entire time.  They learned the
basics of the game and when and how to rotate. They have been working on
their serves for a
while and all the girls were able to serve during the match. Nevaeh
Johnston was even able to get an ACE! Merritt Academy didn’t let up on
their hard serves and MSD
lost 0-3, scores were 1-25, 5-25, 5-25. In the end, the scores didn’t
matter, the team was happy, they had fun, and they learned a lot.
Congratulations on your
first experience TARTARS! The girls will be going out to celebrate soon.
This team will be a force to reckon with in the future! GO TARTARS!

RISD Soccer

Our coed varsity soccer team made their debut of the 2019 season today
against West Bay Christian Academy with just 9 players playing 8v8 soccer.
This has been an interesting start to the season as we struggled with
getting enough players to field together a full team until last Friday.
Nonetheless, with our Homecoming coming up on Saturday 9/21 — this would
be a great game to get our team going from practice to game mode.

WBCA jumped out to a 2-0 lead as we were still figuring out our formation
and chemistry with some turnover from last year’s team to this year. Our
star all-around player Jayden E. quickly took over and was able to knot
the game up at 2-2 apiece right before halftime.

The second half saw both teams trade goals back and forth with the game
score at 4-4, including Howard V., a sixth-grader’s first and second
career goals. West Bay started to feed their best player the ball and he
was able to beat our defense from time to time, giving West Bay a 8-4
lead. We would add a last-minute goal to make the final score 8-5.

WBCA –  2  6  – 8
RISD –    2  3  – 5

Jayden E. – 3 Goals
Howard V. – 2 Goals
Daury A. – 9 Saves

RISD Soccer Record: 0-1
Next Game: Saturday, September 21 vs. Lexington School for the Deaf (1:30
P.M.) [HOMECOMING]

St Mary’s volleyball

Yesterday the Lady Bisons had their first game of the season against New
Life Christian school from Olean. After a late start, the girls were ready
to see how they
would do taking on an opponent this early in the year. The girls were
excited and eager to work together for the entire match. They fought for
the whole game but
came up short in three straight sets against New Life. Cami Cole and Julia
Bronneberg, while taking different approaches to serving, dominated at the
serving line.
Julia finished with 8 points and 2 aces for the game while Cami had 9
points and 5 aces for the game. Elise Watson also had 1 ace and racked up
the moist assists of
the game. Aleyshka Rivera helped out close to the net while Brionna Zuppa
and Kearah Kelly helped in the back court.

The girls fought hard even though they did not win, and we can’t wait to
see what they can do later in the season.  Please think about coming to
our next game, this
Thursday at SMSD at 4pm.

random deafsports thoughts

in the good old black TV days, no captions

teams wore white and black uniforms in football
games and it was often difficult to determine
which team it was.

Nowadays teams wear uniforms showing college
name, making it easier for us to identify
these teams.
