Gallaudet men’s basketball

GU can’t slow Marymount in season opener

WASHINGTON – It was a season opener the Gallaudet University men’s
basketball team would like to forget. The Bison couldn’t slow down a deep
and talented Marymount (Va.) University squad here Tuesday night in the
Field House as the Saints overwhelmed GU and won in convincing fashion,
90-36.

Gallaudet (0-1) made its first basket then missed its next five chances as
Marymount jumped out to a 15-2 lead just over four minutes into the game.
The Saints continued to push the tempo while the Bison struggled to make a
shot.

Marymount (1-0) shot 64.7 percent from the field (22-for-34) in the first
half and held a commanding 61-18 lead at halftime. Gallaudet only made 7
of 24 shots (29.2 percent) and struggled from 3-point range (1-for-10).

Unfortunately for the Bison the second half was more of the same.

The Saints emptied its bench as 13 different players saw action in the
game. MU, who has 23 players on its roster, received 57 points from its
bench players.

GU regressed in the final 20 minutes of play as the Bison only made 6 of
24 shots (25.0 percent) and went 1-for-9 from 3-point range.

Senior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) led the Bison with 11
points, three assists and one steal. Sophomore guard Corey Smith (Miami,
Fla.) added 10 points, six rebounds, one steal and one block. Freshman
Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) led Gallaudet with seven rebounds (six
defensive boards).

editor’s note:
Marymount was 17-13 last season

Gallaudet is a much better team than what the losing score would
indicate. All teams have bad nights and for Gallaudet, last
night was it. Look at University of Kentucky losing to Evansville
last night, too!
