Gallaudet men’s  soccer

from a tweet
U.S. Soccer Deaf MNT Retweeted Gallaudet Bison
Thankful for the fantastic @GallaudetBison players on our team!

note:
this is the first time USA national deaf men’s soccer team has
thanked Gallaudet. Gallaudet soccer has been around since late
fifties, many years before USA national deaf soccer organization
came into being!

Illinois sports

newspaper story, as is

ISD to discontinue most athletic offerings

JACKSONVILLE — The superintendent of the Illinois School for the Deaf in
Jacksonville has announced that five sports will be eliminated starting in
the 2020-21 academic year because of dwindling involvement.

ISD will cut football, volleyball, cheerleading and boys and girls
basketball.

Julee M. Nist, ISD superintendent, wrote in a Dec. 9 press release, “It is
with a heavy heart that I have to announce ISD will not be able to offer a
few sports for next year due to lack of student interest. Our numbers are
just not there to be able to field a team in the following sports:
football, volleyball, basketball and cheerleading.”

Nist said it was a possibility for a while.

“I was informed that this decision would be coming when I first started
working at ISD almost three years ago. I am just as disappointed in this
as you are and truly hope in the future we will have enough students
interested in bringing these sports back.”

ISD started playing eight-man football games back in 2014 and was 2-4 in
2019. The Tigers’ final IHSA playoff appearance came in 1998.

note:
it is understood that ISD will restore these sports in few years
because of good middle school enrollment numbers. DeafDigest Sports
hopes ISD will come back to this great Deaf Schools Sports family
in due time.

random deafsports talk

Tom Coughlin, not deaf, was fired by Jacksonville
Jaguars.

As a young man during the late sixties and early
seventies, he was the head coach of the RIT club
football team.

A few of his players were NTID students.

One past NTID football player said about
Coughlin:

“he was tough but fair”

An old newspaper picture of him coaching his
deaf players is at:

interesting comment by a deaf rugby player

Lynn Bryant, a British deaf woman, that plays rugby
with her hearing teammates, played rugby with the deaf
for the first time in her life.

She said:

I can really focus on the game instead of having to really look
at someone’s face to see what they’re saying

She is getting ready with her new deaf teammates for
the World Deaf Rugby XV 2020 competition.  Deaf Rugby
does not follow the international deaf eligibility
rules and has never been part of the Deaflympics.

Still, Deaf Rugby is deaf rugby.
