Gallaudet between U of Virginia and Pennsylvania SD

part of newspaper story

Christopher Madison Turman III died of natural causes on April 24, at his
home in Chestnut Hill. He was 85.

As a freshman varsity college wrestler, Turman suffered a career-ending
injury in a pre-season match against Gallaudet University, the nation’s
preeminent university for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  In an ironic
twist of fate, Turman dedicated 31 years to volunteer service to the Deaf
and Hard of Hearing community as a member of the Board of Trustees of the
Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (PSD), the last six, as its chairman and
CEO.  He was among a group credited with relocating the campus and
significantly expanding its programs and outreach, thereby impacting a
generation of Philadelphia’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

random deafsports thoughts

With respect to the story on Christopher Madison Turman III
(above), past athletes often remember playing against
Gallaudet in a variety of sports.

When they meet up with DeafDigest Sports editor they have
said they played against Gallaudet during their student
days.

Few months ago while vacationing in North Carolina, eating
at a restaurant, a retired teacher at West Virginia School
for the Deaf and her husband chatted up with DeafDigest
Sports editor and his wife.

The husband said he graduated from Shepherd University
and played against Gallaudet in a football game in
the 1962 season. Shepherd won 58-0 but the husband
remembers the football game for a more personal
(painful) reason.

A Gallaudet player broke his nose!
