Gallaudet’s Sam Atkinson named 66th CoSIDA President

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University Associate Athletic Director for
Communications Sam Atkinson accepted the College Sports Information
Directors of America (CoSIDA) Presidential gavel virtually on June 12
during the organization’s annual business meeting. The business meeting
was held as a virtual event, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of the
#CoSIDA2020 virtual convention being conducted throughout the month of
June.

CoSIDA was founded in 1957 and is a 3,100+ member national organization
comprised of the sports public relations, media relations and
communications/information professionals throughout all levels of
collegiate athletics in the United States and Canada.

note:
This is a huge national honor for Sam. If we are talking about sports
information directors at these big time universities – Notre Dame,
Duke, Oklahoma, USC, etc, yes – Sam works with them on important
principles, issues and matters with respect to reporting of athletic
announcements, tournament results and updates, plus how to respond
to questions from the media (TV, radio, newspapers, magazines).

For years, Gallaudet had many sports information directors, both
deaf and hearing. Some only served a few months, some only served
a couple of years. Sam came to Gallaudet from his similar position
at Salisbury University and is still here, taking care of publicity on
all Gallaudet athletic programs.

Congrats, Sam.

tweet on a football huddle

The Football Huddle Was Invented to Help Deaf
Players Communicate

In 1890, @Gallaudet invented a way for players to sign
plays to each other without the other team being able to
see what was going on. It caught on across all teams,
bolstering team spirit.

a correction:
The huddle was not invented to bolster team spirit.
The huddle caught on in football because it helps
the QB communicate clearly with his players without
having to shout out aloud on the scrimmage line.

Times have changed and the huddle is slowly going
obsolete. Even Gallaudet is using the huddle less
and less.

Gallaudet recruits

yesterday’s newspapers reported Gallaudet recruits
in men’s basketball and softball.

Certainly there are many more other Gallaudet recruits not
reported in the newspapers.

Red Bull sponsors athletes and participants in these
extreme sports. It currently sponsors kayaker Dane
Jackson.

He is not the first deaf athlete to be sponsored by
Red Bull.

Not that too many years ago Red Bull sponsored deaf
world class motocross racer Ashley Fiolek. For
reasons of her own, she abruptly retired from this
sport, despite winning a number of championships!
