very shocked that Gallaudet has a footbal team

Thanks to Deaf U, there were quite a few hearing
people, these football fans, expressing shock
that Gallaudet has a football team, and that the
deaf can play football!

Gallaudet fields one of the nation’s oldest
collegiate football teams, starting this
sport in 1883.

Gallaudet has sent several players to professional
ranks (not NFL or CFL but a notch or two below
the top levels).

Gallaudet has had a national NCAA-III football
All-American first teamer at offensive
tackle.

It was Nyle’s idea behind Deaf U. Did he play
football? Not at Gallaudet, but one one season as
a member of the Maryland School for the Deaf
JV team. His deaf brother was an outstanding
defensive back at Gallaudet, scoring one
touchdown on a 95-yard interception against
Catholic University.

And Gallaudet invented the first football
huddle – way back in 1894.

Texas football

TSD lost a close game against New Braunfels 30-34.

Next game: St Gerard at 7:00 pm at TSD.

frustrations of assistant football coach who is deaf

One of the assistant coaches with a public high
school team is deaf. He coaches the line.

His team played first three games of the season before
Covid-19 issues got worse, forcing cancellation of some
games and postponement of practices. One player on his
team tested positive, forcing the school to suspend
practice for 10 days. And the opponents have their
own Covid-19 issues, making remainder of the season
very questionable.

The deaf coach said:
It will be very interesting to see how it would turn out

deaf golfer

part of newspaper story

The Safari Tour, which is the ‘Road to Kenya Open’ for regional players,
has also attracted leading single handicap amateurs among them Mutahi
Kibugi, Taimur Malik and deaf golfer Issac Makokha, who recently won the
Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship at Vet Lab.

deaf ultra-marathon swimmer

long story, edited for brevity

Caroline Block: Breaking Records & Barriers With Every Stroke

Ultra-marathon swimmer Caroline Block is deaf.

She is considered to be one of the younger superstars in
this event.

She wasn’t considered good enough to swim competitively
in college, but ultra-marathon swimming is a different
kind of event.

When not practicing swimming she resides in New York City.

When her crew commicates with her they write messages on
white board that they carry on their boat.

She currently holds a new world distance record for a
multileg lake swim; the third-longest freshwater swim of
all-time.

random deafsports thoughts

The story of Caroline Block, an ultra-marathon swimmer
who never swam competitively in college, is a reminder
of a marathon runner who never ran track (or cross
country) competitively at Gallaudet.

That runner was past president King Jordan.

Not sure if he continues to run marathons nowadays.
