Gallaudet men’s basketball

In the 1962-63 basketball team, Gallaudet played against
University of Paris and lost 42-39.

Many years later, University of Paris went through a
series of organizational and structural changes – and
is now Sorbonne University.

The US News’ 2021 Best Global Universities Rankings
has rated Sorbonne as the world’s 43nd best
university. It is akin to Gallaudet playing a game
with one of these Ivy League universities such
as Yale or Harvard or Princeton! This such a
game has never took place.

It was a club team, consisting of past USA collegiate
players that traveled to France to study for higher
degrees. There are no varsity sports in France, just
club teams in different sports.

One of the players was 6’6 tall that controlled the
paint and the boards and was a major factor in
defeating Gallaudet.

Anyway, if one said Gallaudet played against
Sorbonne in the past, it is not an exaggeration.

Riverside sports

note:
A while ago a newspaper in Riverside county said that CSDR and
Sherman Indian were the only two schools in the county
not to play sports this year.

A clarification is in order.

Riverside said:
We might return to campus some time soon and we might still can
play some games in April or May.  Just a clarification here.

Pro golf – Kevin Hall

part of an interview

The world of professional golf can be a particularly brutal one, with
Monday qualifiers, big cuts in the field and endless traveling, but Kevin
Hall, who has been chasing his dream of being a professional golfer for 16
years now, is no stranger to adversity.

Deaf and Blind NBA basketball player

today, a story ran as follows:

The story of a partially blind and deaf NBA player

It was about Freddie Scolari, who was a pretty good
NBA player during the early fifties. DeafDigest Sports
editor, as a kid, remembers him.  He was deaf in one
ear and blind in one eye.

Reason for bringing this up was because the Sporting
News, around that time, ran a story of Bill Schyman,
a DePaul basketball star.

The headline ran something like this:

Deaf and blind basketball player

Was Schyman deaf? Yes, take off his hearing aid and he
pretty much was deaf – and was part of the Deaf Community
for years and years, plus coaching Gallaudet basketball
during the sixties. And playing Deaf Club basketball.

Was Schyman blind? He had to wear eyeglasses all the time,
but that does not qualify him as blind!

Schyman played professional basketball for a touring team
that played against Harlem Globetrotters. He stayed with
the touring team for two years before moving on to other
pursuits in life.
