Varsity Volleyball Results – 8/26/21

8/26/21: FSDB at Warner Christian Academy

Lady Dragons Volleyball finishes Eagles in five games.

The Lady Dragons had their first match of the season in 2021! They played
at the Warner Christian Academy. The Lady Dragons won their first game
against the Eagles,
25-23. However, our girls fell to the Eagles in the second and third
games, 19-25 and 17-25. We made bad serves, and we made some silly mental
mistakes. The girls
did not give up. They knew they had to play two more games because they
truly wanted the win after a long year without any competitive season!

Following the loss of the two games, our girls recovered to come back and
win the fourth game, 25-18. Our girls were down at the beginning of the
match, but they
stayed together! They played hard with a positive attitude to earn each
set. They made some beautiful passing and hitting! In the final game, our
girls were on
fire. Cassidy served 13 straights, and we led to the match with a score of
15-7.

After the game, I see our girls as ONE TEAM. I also see them as ONE
DRAGON. They have played with their hearts on the court! They have made me
feel so proud! Be
sure to give them big congratulations!!

random deafsports thoughts

It was said that first sports club for the hearing impaired
already existed in Berlin in 1888

Really? Without additional research, DeafDigest Sports will not
accept it as a fact. There have been early years deaf sports clubs
in Great Britain in the 19th century. And recently a deaf resident
of Boston was arguing with a disbelieving DeafDigest Sports editor
that his club was the nation’s oldest deaf sports club. He continued
to argue and got angrier and angrier when DeafDigest Sports expressed
his doubts!

If it means anything, then the Gallaudet football team played its
first game in 1883, five years earlier – playing three games
that season.

National Softball Association for the Deaf

from a newspaper story, not from NSAD itself!

part of the posting

The Bluesox, a Midwest deaf softball team, won the National Softball
Association for the Deaf Championship this past weekend.

“We developed the Bluesox. Basically it’s a team that consisted of guys in
the Midwest. So we’re talking like Minneapolis, Omaha, Kansas City and
there are five guys from South Dakota. Three of them live in Sioux Falls.

This year, the Bluesox went 3-0 in pool play. They then lost to a team out
of Austin, Tex. in the first game of the double elimination bracket, but
went on to beat the same team in the Championship. They had to win
five-straight games to win it all.

note:
The Bluesox is basically a regional team, not a local team,
per story above.

deaf track an field championships

from a brief newspaper story

The 4th World Deaf Athletics Championships is scheduled
to happen from August 23 in Poland

note:
is USA participating? Do not know. Very little, if any,
publicity from these organizations under the umbrella
of US Deaf Sports Federation.

pro boxer

part of posting

Luis Gerardo Castillo has already overcome far greater challenges in his
life than the one he’ll face in Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom HQ back garden
this weekend.

Glasgow’s Kash Farooq is a highly rated bantamweight contender and
expected to beat Castillo comfortably on Saturday night, but the Mexican
will no doubt have other ideas.

Castillo is 28-2 (18 KOs) as a pro boxer and has incredibly build that
record despite being deaf-mute.

La Sombra (The Shadow) was born deaf and, as a result, is unable to speak.

Due to his poor background, he was never able to learn formal sign
language.

“During the fight it’s a different situation. It complicates things
because I can’t be distracting him to give him signs.

“I do get to use some things that don’t distract him – like moving the
first, second or third rope, hitting the ring mat when he’s facing me.

“That’ll give him strategic messages like switching to plan A, B or C. Or
throwing a right, straight, cross, etc.”

Who?

The university would not identify that deaf player.

Very frustrating! A star or a sub or mocking a player for being

Thirteen Former Greats To Be Inducted Into The South Dakota
Basketball Hall Of Fame

part of newspaper story

Janel Birrenkott, Frederick, Md. (Lemmon 1982): After excelling at Lemmon,
where she averaged 25 points per game as a senior, Birrenkott scored 1,352
career points at Northern State University. She led the Northern Sun
Conference in scoring with 20 points per game in 1986. Birrenkott
represented the United States in the Deaf Olympics.

note:
She briefly played in pro women’s basketball

DeafDigest Sports editor saw her play numerous times – just one word
describes her – awesome

Story did not say that she led South Dakota collegiate
women’s scorers (all classes) in most points scored
in one season

random deafsports thoughts

Janel Birrenkott (see above story) was lucky.
She discovered Deaf Culture while as an adult.
She was having fun with her hearing teammates
at a local tavern. She saw two deaf people
chatting in one corner of the tavern, and despite
no sign language knowledge, came over to them.
They told her everything about Deaf Culture
and Deaf Sports.. She quickly joined the deaf club
athletic teams and immediately became the talk
of the deaf clubs in the midwest region. Yes,
she has learned plenty ASL to be fluent in that
language.
