……………………………

a Gallaudet honor

Gallaudet’s Sam Atkinson appointed to NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Committee
https://www.gallaudetathletics.com/news/2021-22/atkinson-ncaacommittee

always a big honor for Gallaudet when one of the athletic department
administrators help serve NCAA on one of its’ committees

it means administrators from other colleges stand up and take notice
of Gallaudet contributions

…………

another Gallaudet honor – football

John Werner Jr. named ECFC Defensive Player of the Week

Indiana football

part of newspaper story

sectional draw for the IHSAA football 2021 state tournament
will be taking place soon

Sectional 46
Covenant Christian, Edinburgh, Indiana Deaf, Lutheran, Park Tudor,
Sheridan, Tindley

note:
all high school football teams play in the state tournament
as the last game of season – regardless of won/lost
records. If a winless team is paired against an unbeaten
team, so be it.

……………………………..

Indiana basketball

the state has a new rule, effective with this season –
the 35-point mercy rule for basketball.

Good idea? Very certainly so in basketball, especially
if it is used in deaf vs deaf games.

But there is a drawback – deaf tournament teams travel
from long distances and may not like it when they spend
a lot of money on travel costs only to have the game
ended early.

A football coach at a deaf school explained to DeafDigest
Sports editor and that hearing parents of deaf football
players do not like it when they travel long distances
only to have the football games ended prematurely.

Deaf soccer

from a posting

West Africa Deaf Sports Union Football Tournament is taking
place this week

participating teams are:
Liberia, the host country Gambia, Niger, Senegal, Mali, Ghana,
Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, and Guinea Bissau.

…………………………..

Deaf basketball and anti-doping rules

in a posting today, it said:

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has warned
Deaf Basketball that it risks exclusion from future
major events.

………………………

college deaf football player

Shaqke Robinson is playing football at Henderson State University. They
are 6-0 and  currently #6 in the country NCAA Division II.  Shaq’ke is now
the starting defensive tackle. He recently recorded a few tackles and a sack.
He was recently selected MVP of the week last week.

On his team’s roster, he is listed as red shirt sophomore.

He is big, 6’1 and 314 lbs

note:
he played 8-man football at Arkansas School for the Deaf.
Few years back, the school cancelled its season; in
order to continue playing football, he joined the team
at a nearby high school.

………………………..

an elite skater

a newspaper headline

Russian figure skater Diana Davis, performing in ice dancing
with Gleb Smolkin, spoke about hearing problems.

She spoke about her deafness, but has refused to wear
a hearing aid, saying she does not need it in everyday
life.

hardball baseball

from a tweet

Very surprised to know that Japan thinks it is dangerous for
Deaf people to play hardball baseball!!

Hope one day that will change in Japan and for the Deaf people.

note:
this is true, only that Japan deaf never bothered to explain
this to the USA national deaf baseball team (no longer in
existence) that only hardball baseball is played in Japan.

The USA team traveled to Japan about 40 years ago to play
games against deaf Japanese teams. The Americans, surprised
about the hardball, lost the first game.

Getting used to the hardball, the Americans routed
Japan for the rest of the series.

Both hardball and regulation baseball are both “dangerous”
to play for these unskilled players. No real advantage to
either types of baseball.

Speaking of above (Division III Women’s Volleyball Committee)
legendary Gallaudet wrestling coach Thompson Clayton wrote a
book on different holds in wrestling.

Speaking of that book, DeafDigest Sports editor still has
the book. He bought the book at an used book store, of all
the places, in Cooperstown, NY, the home of the Baseball
Hall of Fame!

Wrestling was a major Gallaudet sport. Not anymore as Gallaudet
dropped it due to low participation and low interest.

Sigh!
