Attention – all coaches and athletic directors

When a school reports its game score, the first
thing DeafDigest Sports editor looks for is
their current won-lost record.

If it is missing, the coach will be quickly reminded
by DeafDigest Sports editor. In 99 percent of such
cases, these late won-lost records are then given
to the editor.

In one case, one school has not (or would not)
report its updated won-lost record despite
sending in game results on a regular basis.

That coach has been repeatedly reminded but still no
won-lost record.

For that reason, DeafDigest Sports editor may
not print that school’s latest game resuls!

……………………………….

All-American honors

DeafDigest Sports has not yet invited schools to
nominate their athletes for All-American honors.

One school is an early bird with their nomination.

Yes, that nomination is being accepted.

Season Record: 4-2

We visited rural Trenton to battle Riverside Christian Wranglers for the
First Coast Division championship.  It was not our night as we fell to the
hosts, 20-61.

After a sluggish start, we found ourselves in a 0-20 hole.  We came to
life in the middle of the 2nd quarter and positioned ourselves to be in a
one-possession game that never materialized.

Late in the 2nd quarter, we had just scored to make it 14-26.  We forced a
fumble, but the play was ruled dead by an “inadvertent whistle” and they
retained possession. A few plays later, they connected on a deep touchdown
pass to make it 14-34 at halftime.  Had that whistle not happened (our
fans who were on our side of the field swore that it came from the home
crowd in their stands and not a referee), we possibly could have made it
20-26 at halftime plus starting the 2nd half on offense.

Alas, it didn’t happen, and we could not regain the small momentum we had
going in the 2nd quarter, and the game got away from us in the final
quarter and half.

Offensively, as a whole, we did not have a pretty game.  We shot ourselves
in the foot numerous times with bobbled snaps and botched handoffs
befitting of 1st game of the year miscues.  We must clean that up.

Defensively, we had no answers to the stable of backs RC ran our way.
Their running backs ran real hard and we had difficulties getting them to
the ground.

Next comes the playoffs. We qualified for the Championship bracket (the
SSAC also has a Consolation bracket) as a 8 seed,  We are going to face #1
and undefeated Merritt Island Christian.  We met in the 2nd week of the
season, and we lost 24-60.  It will be an away game for us either on 10/28
or 10/29.  We are still finalizing the details of the game.  It will be
shared once we know it.

Our last volleyball game.

It was our Senior night and last game. Unfortunately, It was not the same
when we always have a last game at any ESDAA tournament. But again, we had
a close game
last Tuesday, 25 to 22,  27 to 25, then 25 to 11.  It was excited game for
fans to watch our game and It was nice to have Fans (Senior players’
family) watched our
game. Of course, we would love to see more fans come in and watch our game
for basketball season!
Mariana had 9 kills and 8 aces while Emma had 7 kills and 7 aces.

Our record is 10-2

Right now, we are moving to basketball season in few weeks.

Last week we completed week 10 of our training phase to prepare us for the
Faith Academy XC Championships meet in Marble Falls. Once again, our
athletes showed up and gave it their best shot with running season best
times with some all-time personal best times as well. The girl’s
championship race covered a distance of 2 miles while the boys
championship race was a 5k distance. Two of our female athletes (Patricia
Sucilla-Orozco & Kristen Medrano) decided to join the boys in running a 5k
distance in hopes of getting an official time they can post towards the
National Deaf Interscholastic Athletic Association rankings & since this
was their first 5k of the season it will count as a season best for that
distance.

Also running a season best for a 5k distance was Arturo Merchan, while
Hawkins Morgan, Gage Hopper, & Lorenzo Urrutia ran a personal all-time
best for that distance. Hawkins finished 12th place overall earning a
District XC medal and his new time now places him in the # 5 spot of the
TSD record book.

Our final challenge of the 2021 XC season will be on Monday November 1st
at the TAPPS XC State Championship meet located at Cottonwood Creek Golf
Course in Waco, TX.  As of now our boys will run their 5k event at 9:15 am
and our girls will run their 2-mile event at 10:20 am.

Dummy Hoy (William Hoy) – The First Deaf Major League Baseball Player

No, it is wrong.

The first deaf major league player was pitcher Ed Dundon. He wasn’t
a great pitcher and only lasted a couple of years in major league
baseball.

Everyone talks about Hoy; no one talks about Dundon or Dummy Taylor
or even Dick Sipek!
