A deaf pitcher is drafted

part of newspaper story

Sherrod is third A&M pitcher selected in MLB Draft

After seeing teammates Corbin Martin and Brigham Hill come off the board in
the first two days of the Major League Baseball draft, it was Cason
Sherrod’s turn Wednesday.

Texas A&M had a current pitcher selected on each of the first two days of
the Major League Baseball Draft – Corbin Martin to the Astros in the second
round on Monday and Brigham Hill to the Nationals in the fifth round on
Tuesday.

On Wednesday, as the picks come in fast with rounds 11-40 are scheduled for
the same day, another Aggie pitcher came off the board.

Reliever Cason Sherrod was selected in the 13th round by the Kansas City
Royals with the No. 390 overall pick.

The junior righthander is 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA in 29 relief appearances this
year. He also has four saves. Sherrod, who hails from Dallas W.T. White High
School, has served as a reliever during his entire career in Aggieland. He
was born with 50 percent hearing loss but wears hearing aids that help him
on the mound.
editor’s note:

his team is now in the College World Series, which means if he
decides to sign a minor league contract, he has to wait until
the Series ends.

a challenge for lipreaders that love sports

The Washington Nationals drafted a player named Trey Turner.
They already have a player named Trea Turner.

It is a challenge for deaf lipreaders because baseball
announcers said that Trea and Trey are pronounced the same.

Few years ago the Nationals also had two players -
Ryan Zimmerman and Jordan Zimmermann. Same thing – both
last names are prounounced the same.

DeafDigest Sports editor is not an expert lipreader and
does not like to lipread more than a few words at a time!
