comments about Deaflympics

The theme never changes – highly qualified deaf athletes
do not take part in the Deaflympics for one reason -
no money.

And some of the Deaflympics participants are really
not qualified but they participate – only because their
families have money.

DeafDigest Sports editor remembers one deaf tennis
player, a student at a Big Ten university. Curious
about that tennis player, the editor checked with
the sports information office of that Big Ten
university. They replied, saying they never heard
of her. Apparently she was an intramural tennis
player that somehow was selected to take part in
the Deaflympics.

What was the player’s results at the Deaflympics -
big shut out 0-6, 0-6 and being quickly eliminated.

Take 6’9 Leon Grant as an example – he terrorized
deaf club basketball in the 1960′s and 1970′s.
He only took part in one basketball competition.
Same reason – no money.

One former member of the US Deaflympics administrative
board got tired one same old issue at each meeting -
how to raise funds! This is the reason he is no longer
on the administrative board.
