Deaflympics culture – comparing India with USA

When Americans come home after participating in the
Deaflympics, the first thing on their minds is to
come home ASAP and get back to their normal daily
living routines.

Apparently it is different with deaf athletes
from India. When they arrive at their home airports,
they expect to be greeted by hearing sports and
even government VIPs, congratulating them on their
Deaflympics performances!

This actually happened. A group of gold-medal winning
athletes from India expected a crowd of VIPs
greeting them. When none showed up, they sulked
and refused to go home, staying in the airport for
hours!

Different nations. Different cultural expectations!

Deaflympics – men’s basketball

Lithuania won the men’s basketball gold medal,
and already they are saying they are the best deaf
basketball team in the world.

Are they?

No.

USA, for reasons of its own, did not send its
basketball team to the Deaflympics, despite
originally promising to do so.

They cannot return in future Deaflympics without
paying the heavy fine for withdrawal. The fine
is into few thousands of dollars.

Who is the best deaf team in the world?

DeafDigest Sports editor says that Gallaudet
University is. Could Lithuania national deaf
team defeat Gallaudet University.

We shall never know!

Alabama football

lost a game on September 29th; the scheduled
opponent – Jacksonville Christian Academy
is not fielding a team this season due to
low numbers. This means Alabama gets a
forfeit win.

a fictional book

Left Out  by Tim Green

Landon Dorch wants to be like everyone else. But his deafness and the way
he talks have always felt like insurmountable obstacles. But now he
finally sees his chance to fit in. Bigger and taller than any other
seventh grader in his new school, Landon plans to use his size to his
advantage and join the school’s football team. But the same speech
problems and the cochlear implants that help him hear continue to haunt
him.

Just when it looks like Landon will be left out of football for good, an
unlikely friend comes along. But in the end only Landon can fight his way
off the bench and through a crowded field of bullies bent on seeing him
forever left out.
