Gallaudet football helmet one of four left in first Helmet Bowl National
Championship, vote daily for the Bison

WASHINGTON – Then there were four. Only four college football helmets are
left in the first Helmet Bowl National Championship and Gallaudet
University is one of the four. The Helmet Bowl National Championship run
by Helmet Tracker is seeking to find the best college football helmet in
the country through online voting by fans.

Gallaudet, the last Division II, III or NAIA school left, will have to go
up against other Division I programs the rest of the way. The Bison and
their fan base have already dispatched several Division I powerhouse names
like No. 6 seed The Ohio State University Buckeyes in the second round,
the No. 8 seed Colgate University Raiders in the third round and the No. 3
seed United States Military Academy West Point (Army) in the
quarterfinals. GU, the No. 4 seed, won the East Region with a sound 59
percent to 41 percent victory over the Black Knights.

The Bison, a Division III program, now face Kennesaw State University
Owls, the South Region champs as a No. 5 seed, in the semifinal round this
week. The winner of this semifinal matchup will face the winner from the
other semifinal round between Central Michigan University (North Region
champ) and San Diego State University (West Region champ) next week in the
national championship.

Fans can vote daily from all of their devices and browsers here:
http://helmettracker.com/national-championship. The week-long voting
period will close on Tuesday at 1 p.m. (EST).

Jeff Zogg, founder of Helmet Tracker, strives to serve and honor college
football equipment managers.

“We find equipment managers to be some of the most fun, selfless,
hard-working people we know,” said Zogg. “We each have our favorite local
and national college football teams, but behind each team is a passionate
group of equipment managers who care about the look of their teams’
helmets and equipment.”

The Helmet Tracker first Helmet Bowl National Championship started this
fall with all 777 college football team helmets in the mix. Each
conference crowned a conference champion (76 conference champions) with
the top 64 conference champions with the highest vote counts advanced to
the national championship tournament and were seeded by region.

Gallaudet is thankful and proud of our own Kris Gould, who manages all of
our athletic teams’ equipment and especially our Bison football helmet.
Vote for the Bison and show your appreciation for Kris in the process. Go
Bison!

note:
defeating higher seeded teams is nothing new to Gallaudet!

The 1943 Gallaudet Iron Men Basketball team defeated three higher
seeded teams to win the Mason-Dixon Conference basketball championship.

The first round game was a win over the conference #1 seeded team!

Q & A on Deaf Sports issues

Q. Why cannot NTID establish its own
football team?

A. NCAA will not permit it – basically
because NTID is one of the eight RIT
colleges on the campus. About 15 years ago
a group of NTID students wanted to establish
a club football team; they were serious about
it – but it failed. Lack of money was the
big reason. RIT had a club football team
during the seventies but dropped this sport.

RIT conducted a varsity football feasibilty study
led by an outside consultant. The recommendation
was 50 percent for football; 50 percent against
football – it was up to the RIT presdent.

The RIT president killed the idea. Bottom line -
when RIT had a club football team, deaf
participation was minimal – maybe just one or
two deaf players per season. The hint was
that deaf want to play football, but not with
hearing!

Sharp Movie Rewind: Setting the Line in “The Replacements”

part of the web posting:
a deaf tight end who *allegedly* had first-round talent

note:
this “deaf tight end” was mentioned as playing for
Gallaudet. Unfortunately it was a fake-deaf actor.
The casting director could have cast a real Gallaudet
tight end to play the role, but he didn’t
