GU splits doubleheader with St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn)

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University earned its first win of the 2018 season
here Thursday afternoon at the GU Softball Complex as the Bison defeated
St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) 6-1 in the first game of the
non-conference doubleheader. The Bears won the second game 8-6.

Game 1: Gallaudet 6, St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) 1
Senior Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) led the Bison at the plate going
3-for-4, two runs and two doubles while she pitched a complete game in the
circle to earn her first win of the season.

GU scored twice in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead and
later plated a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth.

Junior Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) had a two-run single in the
sixth while senior Genesis Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas) had two RBI
singles in the win.

Barlow pitched the complete game where she allowed one unearned run, one
hit, three walks and struck out 11. SJC (1-1) got its first hit of the
game in the top of the fifth inning.

Game 2: St. Joseph’s 8, Gallaudet 6
In the second game, Gallaudet scored first but watched St. Joseph’s score
five unanswered runs. The Bison cut the lead to two, 5-3, in the bottom of
the fifth but the Bears added three runs in the seventh before GU scored
three in the bottom half.

Freshman Hailey Henshaw (Newark, Del.) came through with a two-run double
in the fifth and a RBI triple in the seventh to complete her 2-for-3 day,
two runs and three RBI.

GU’s top of the order collected five of GU’s eight hits and knocked in all
six runs.

Freshman Hannah Carter (Dayton, Ohio) took the loss in the circle as she
allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits, three walks and one
strikeout.

CIF NorCal Division 6 State Playoffs

March 7

#7 CSD – 39
#2 Redding Christian 44

We were up 22-11 at halftime, but turnovers, fouls and missed free throws
hurt our chance to pull off the upset. We managed to tie the game at 35 to
send it into overtime on the final shot and led 39-38 in the extra period
before our fourth player fouled out, leaving us with only 4 players on the
court with 1:11 remaining and they finished the game on a 6-0 run.

END OF SEASON – 24-8 which is a school record for most wins in a season,
something for our team to be proud of.

Little League discrimination?

A past NTID student, who was a RIT baseball star
and who played briefly in independent professional
baseball, said that he was not allowed to play Little
League baseball. Reason was his deafness.

Personally DeafDigest Sports editor finds it
hard to believe.

Discrimination? Yes, because of no interpreters.

But some hearing coaches made gestures – an
example in youth football, to rush straight up
(from defensive end position) and then to
turn right to prevent an end sweep by the
running back, a 90 degree angle.

Discrimination? No, because DeafDigest Sports
editor played all sports while growing up -
baseball, basketball and even football.

The football coach simply told the father:
I worry that your son could get hurt!

The only interpreting situation DeafDigest Sports
editor needed – was the father interpreting
the coach’s instructions one time – to bunt
on the second pitch (in the last inning) in hopes
of driving home the winning run from third base.
