Kansas football

*Football Story 2018*

*Kansas School for the Deaf*

*William Richard Ward Head Football Coach*

On Tuesday, October 10, the KSD football team traveled to Jacksonville,
Illinois leaving the KSD campus at 9:00 AM. It rained heavily from Olathe
to Chillicothe, Missouri. It finally cleared up later on the bus trip. We
arrived at our destination, Illinois School for the Deaf around 3:10 PM.
The weather was nice there with temperatures hovering around 60 degrees at
4:30 when we started the game.

It was very tough for the KSD boys’ football team to play a third game
in a
row on the road. This is referred to as the “road killer”. The total
miles
traveled by the KSD football team in the past three weeks to Oklahoma,
Missouri, and Illinois is 884! KSD will finally return to their home field
on October 20 and 27. Both games will start at 2:00 PM.

The ISD team is a bigger team and demonstrated great speed.  I was glad
that our boys were prepared for ISD.  And…..we played with a full team!

I explained to the players that they had to move the ball fast without the
huddle to prevent ISD from developing strategies with their defense. The
KSD boys did a good job playing against ISD. At halftime, KSD led 44 to
14.
The final score was 68 to 20.

The KSD football team has played both 8-man and 6-man football games over
the years, depending on the number of players on the KSD team and the
other
deaf schools.  The KSD boys’ football team originally join 8-man
football
in 1983 and 6-man football in 1989. Since 1983, this is the first time KSD
has had a winning streak of three games in a row!!!!

The big event next week will be the Homecoming game against Iowa School
for
the Deaf.  The game will be played on Saturday, October 20 at 2:00 PM on
the KSD football field. Iowa School for the Deaf beat Arkansas School for
the Deaf, 38 to 28 last month. We know Iowa School for the Deaf well. They
always work extremely hard and never give up till the end of the game.
KSD
is looking forward to a challenging game.
