Gallaudet men’s swimming

Sealts picks up third NEAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Student-Athlete of the
Week honor, second in a row

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced
its conference student-athlete of the week awards for the week of Nov. 20
and Gallaudet University sophomore Ben Sealts (Ottawa, Ohio) was selected
as the NEAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Student-Athlete of the Week for the
third time this season, second straight in a row.

Of the five events won by Gallaudet, Sealts took first in three events in
a non-conference loss to Marymount University last Friday night. The
Bison’s sophomore swimmer swam to a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard
freestyle with a time of 10:47.69. Sealts also won the 100-yard backstroke
and the 200-yard individual medley with times of 56.26 and 2:06.89,

Mississippi football

part of newspaper story

Students at the Mississippi School for the Deaf filed into an auditorium
on the first Wednesday of November, unsure why an announcement had been
made over the televisions throughout the school.

A week had passed since the football team ended its regular season with a
34-0 drubbing of the Louisiana School for the Deaf to improve its record
to 5-1. The team had won national championships before. Some of the
players thought, “Maybe?”

Once everyone was in the auditorium, the 16 football players — some
deaf, others hard of hearing, three blind — were asked to stand up.
Athletic director Cheryl Kaler presented them with a yellow paper banner
with purple letters on it, announcing DeafDigest had named the football
team national champions for the second consecutive year and for the 10th
time overall.

random deafsports thoughts

Gary Klingensmith coached Gallaudet football for
three seasons in the sixties.

What was the craziest play he created in one game?

His offensive tackle had the best arm on the team;
he was a high school quarterback but his size was
needed on the Gallaudet offensive line.

Just for one play, he pulled out of his tackle
position at the snap, stepped into the backfield,
took the pitchout from the quarterback and threw
a long pass (behind the scrimmage line). It was
a legal pass.

The long pass didn’t work. Klingensmith never tried
that play again!
