women’s:
Wetzel leaps into 11th place in long jump at Seahawk Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The first day of the 2019 Wendy’s Seahawk Track & Field
Invitational, hosted by UNC Wilmington (UNCW), is in the books after 14
schools competed at the newly-renovated Harold Greene Track & Field
Complex here Friday. No team scores were kept.

Gallaudet freshman Hannah Wetzel (Fremont, Calif.) placed 11th in the long
jump with a leap of 4.50 meters, that came on her first jump of three.

Senior Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) was GU’s top sprinter in the 100-meter
dash with a time of 14.21 seconds (15th place) posted in the first heat.

Sophomore Carina Dominguez Can (Hillsboro, Ore.) was Gallaudet’s top
thrower in the hammer. She had a top toss of 18.62 meters (15th place) set
on her third and final throw.

men’s:
Haynes places seventh in hurdles on first day of Seahawk Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The first day of the 2019 Wendy’s Seahawk Track & Field
Invitational, hosted by UNC Wilmington (UNCW), is in the books after 14
schools competed at the newly-renovated Harold Greene Track & Field
Complex here Friday. No team scores were kept.

Gallaudet’s men’s team had two sprinters advance to the final for the
100-meter dash. Freshman Eric Gregory (Metairie, La.) was sixth overall
with a time of 11.02 seconds posted in the first heat. Senior Toraneau
Varice (Pompano Beach, Fla.) was eighth overall as he posted a time of
11.12 seconds in the third heat.

Senior Michael Haynes (Edwardsville, Ill.) was seventh in the 110-meter
hurdles as he crossed the finish line in 16.36 seconds in the second heat.
Sophomore Jordan Kray (Fremont, Calif.) was ninth with a time of 18.49
that he posted in the first heat.

Senior Montray Roberts (Dallas, Texas) placed 10th in the long jump with a
leap of 5.99 meters, that came on his last jump.

Sophomore Juan Cornejo (Hamburg, N.J.) was GU’s top thrower in the hammer
as he finished 12th with a top throw of 29.73 meters on his second of
three tosses. Senior Ronald Mattingly (Miami, Fla.) was right behind
Cornejo in 13th place (27.39 meters).

In the javelin, freshman Nicholas Smith (Hamburg, Pa.) was 11th when he
posted a top throw of 40.30 meters on his first toss.

A newspaper story today:
Another well-known sporting tradition that began with deaf players is the
football huddle. In 1920, players from Gallaudet University formed a
huddle to hide their signs form the other team.

Note:
Huddle started in 1920?  No, it started in 1894.
