random deafsports thoughts

Golden State Warriors’ Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson
suffered devastating injuries in two consecutive
playoff games that will sideline them either for
the entire, or a significant part of the next
2019-2020 basketball season.

Can’t happen to the deaf?

It did!

In the 1966-67 basketball season a game between
Maryland SD and Kendall SD (before 9-12 grades
became MSSD) took place at the old Gallaudet
Hughes Field House. Starters Arkley Wright
broke his forearm and was lost for the season.
Then another starter Gordon Gray slammed his
head into the wall during a layup attempt
and badly gashed his forehead, and like with
Wright, was lost for the season.

Deaf referee Dick Caswell officiated the
game and said he never saw this happen in his
many years of basketball refereeing!

Maryland coach Don Phelps relied on Wright
and Gray, his top two players, to carry the
team on their shoulders, during that season.
With both gone, it pretty much devastated
Maryland’s season.

Kendall, by the way, won the game.

incorrect ball/strike comment

from a tweet

Fun Fact: Did you know the creation of balls and strike hand signals by
umpires was because deaf ballplayer William Dummy Hoy couldn’t hear what
the umpire’s call was.

note:
the umpire does not shout out balls; he only shout-outs strikes

True story – a rookie deaf umpire, working the home plate, made
the mistake of shouting out balls. He was advised that balls signal
are not shouted out; only strikes are.
