Another Gallaudet announcement

NEAC Presidents’ Council statement regarding fall sports

Given the current state of the pandemic and the most recent NCAA
recommendations, the NEAC Presidents’ Council has unanimously determined
that our eight member institutions will not participate in intercollegiate
athletic competition during the Fall 2020 season. NEAC institutions will
work together in collaboration with the conference office and the NCAA to
seek alternate opportunities to provide a meaningful student-athlete
experience throughout the fall season. A decision regarding winter and
spring competition will be made at a later date.

The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has eight NCAA Division III
member institutions which include: Gallaudet University, Lancaster Bible
College, Morrisville State, Penn College, Penn State Abington, Penn State
Berks, Penn State Harrisburg, and Wells College.

No sports this fall for North Eastern Athletic Conference schools

The decision was made on a vote Friday morning by the presidents of each
of the conference’s eight schools, which had followed a meeting of
athletic directors Thursday night.

“We have a couple schools in New York and Maryland and four schools in
Pennsylvania,” Lancaster Bible College director of athletics Pete Beers
said. “That’s three different states. And different quarantine rules for
each of those states. So they were having issues with travel. Then
Gallaudet decided they’re not playing this fall. … And one of the
schools didn’t want to lose the academic side by taking in the risk of
bringing in outside competition and comprising that opportunity. So it’s a
hedging of bets. At the end of the day, most people don’t prefer online
learning. So we’ll hedge our bets and we’d rather do face-to-face learning
and not play, than play and risk going back to online learning.”

Beers said the conference is leaving open the possibility of playing its
fall sports slate in the spring.

“Everyone keeps throwing it out there that we’ll kick the can down the
road,” he said. “But spring sports took the hit last year. You want to hit
them again to share facilities? And then you start looking at the
economics of transportation. … It’s a great concept. But it would be
quite a challenge for Lancaster Bible College.”

Beers said he expects the conference to have an answer on the fate of
winter sports by early- to mid-September. Winter sports practices are
slated to begin Oct. 15.

preferred first name

part of a long newspaper posting about Dummy Hoy

He himself had no problem with the nickname Dummy, which at that time was
a term used to describe a deaf person, not one of limited intellect. In
fact, when approached by someone who referred to him as William, he
informed them that he went by Dummy.

note:
keep in mind it was a different era, different attitudes and different
times. If it was nowadays, Hoy would have preferred William or Bill
or Billy!

random deafsports thoughts

with respect to the NEAC announcement (above story),
Gallaudet is a member of three different conferences.

NEAC is all sports (except football and track)

ECFC is football only

CSAC is track only (NEAC sponsors cross country, but not track)

Complicated? Yes, but no, too!
