Dedication to a past minor league player

Jack Van Natta, who was deaf, but functioned
as a hearing person, knowing no ASL and
adept at fooling people into thinking he was
hearing, departed us.

A skilled baseball player, he broke hitting
records at Moravian College in Pennsylvania.

After college he played three seasons of
minor league baseball in the Pittsburgh
Pirates system, sporting a .258 career
batting average. His highest level of
play was Class B (before the minor leagues
changed its classificaiton system; it would
have been sort of Low-A nowadays).

Gallaudet to join Atlantic East as associate member in men’s and women’s
swimming and diving, effective Fall 2020

LANCASTER, Pa. –  The Atlantic East Conference is proud to announce that
Gallaudet University has been accepted as an associate member in men’s and
women’s swimming and diving for the 2020-21 season.

Gallaudet, currently a member of the North Eastern Athletic Conference
(NEAC), will join Cabrini University, Immaculata University, Marymount
(Va.) University, Marywood University, Cedar Crest College and St. Mary’s
College of Maryland as participating members in men’s and women’s swimming
and diving. The Bison will be immediately eligible for all-conference
awards and the conference’s swimming and diving championships.

note:
Gallaudet currently belongs to four different athletic conferences

football
Eastern Collegiate Football Conference

track and cross country
Colonial States Athletic Conference

swimming and diving
Atlantic East Conference

all other Gallaudet sports
North Eastern Athletic Conference

note:

why not just one conference for all sports?

Times have changed, “one size fits all” conferences
are becoming less and less! As an example,
Johns Hopkins University, a NCAA-III program, is a
member of the Big Ten Conference (NCAA-I) – in lacrosse
only!

Indiana sports

from a tweet

Kansas baseball

note:
this school used to field baseball teams many years ago

a newspaper posting is this:

America’s pastime and a popular program at the Kansas State Historical
Society both went virtual Friday night.

Author Mark Eberle became the first presenter to take the Museum After
Hours program live online when he discussed the history of baseball in
Kansas from 1858 to 1941 with online visitors.

He told about integrated baseball games before and after the turn of the
century, including ones involving players of Native American, Mexican and
Japanese descent. He shared the history of teams from the Kansas School
for the Deaf. And he talked about baseball facilities across the state,
including the first game in Kansas played under lights, which occurred in
Concordia in 1905.

note:
Kansas Deaf had games against University of Kansas – same old story
in these days – Kansas Deaf men against men from University of Kansas.

UNC Football: The weirdest season in Tar Heels history

UNC began the 1900 season against a school that the record book lists as
“Deaf & Dumb Institute.” Further research shows that it was probably
against what is now called the North Carolina School for the Deaf in
Morganton, NC. I think we can agree, that’s a more appropriate name.
Anyway, Carolina easy got past them with a 38-0 win.

note:

same old story – UNC men against NCSD men, not NCSD boys!

resarch what year 51-0 nc vs tenn  that game ended at half time?

would tenn be better than unc?

random deafsports thoughts

Major League baseball is honoring the rich heritage
of Negro Baseball of past years.

This begs a question:

Have we ever had a deaf player in Negro Baseball?

do not know.
