Fall Sports Preview: Bobcat volleyball team looking to make positive
strides

“With COVID-19, practices, of course, are different,” Iowa School for the
Deaf volleyball coach Katrina Landolt said. “We have a hand sanitizer
station in place so that we can use it before and after we touch the ball,
the water bottles, and anything really. We are also sanitizing everything
that we use, like the balls and equipment for an example, after use and
social distancing as much as possible.”

We only had two seniors last year. This year, we have one. This group of
players will be growing together as a team for the next few years. I do
believe that the players are excited to be playing.”

That one senior is Kali Nipper, who will be relied on for her production
on the court as well as as a leader and mentor to younger players (see
note)

“She is our hitter, who is a hard worker and a motivated, positive
player,” Landolt said. “She strives to practice her skills until she
masters it and tries new things as well.”

from a coach

Volleyball was not canceled, because they can play local games.  Football
would not have been able to find local competition because noone locally
plays 6-man.  The boys will be running cross country.

Kali Nipper is actually a sophomore. The article has her class listed

The 25 Most Inspiring Olympic Moments of All Time

15. Korean Unification Flag

Following decades of unrest post-Korean war, North and South Korea found
common ground for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, marching together in the
Opening Ceremonies under a unified flag (and uniforms). While the two
countries did compete separately, their joint marching symbolized an
openness to peace and cooperation.

what about Deaflympics? Will the Deaf North Korean team unify with the
Deaf South Korean team in the next Deaflympics?

The legendary coach

Legendary basketball coach John Thompson
(Georgetown) passed away.

Has he ever played a game against a deaf team?

Yes, as a high school coach with the national
power St Anthony HS (DC). That was before he
moved on to Georgetown.

Do not how how it happened, but a game between
St Anthony and Model Secondary School for the
Deaf took place at the old Kendall School
gym on the Gallaudet campus.

Thompson, seeing that the deaf team was no
match for his national power, would not allow
his first and second stringers to play in the
game, only allowing his third team to play the
entire game.

Yes, the third stringers easily defeated
Model. When the game ended, he asked
Bob Bergan, the Model coach at that time,
and the Model team to stay around to
observe St Anthony post-game practice.

Thompson gave his first and second team
players grueling practice drills that
left the deaf team awed!

St Anthony eventually was closed for good
by the Catholic diocese in Washington, DC.
