head football coach that is deaf

part of newspaper story

Cyprus High’s First Football Coach Who Is Deaf: ‘We Can Do Everything
Except Hear’

MAGNA, Utah – High school football season is in full swing. It’s already a
historic season, and a new Cyprus High School football coach is setting
records.

Dante Ramirez is the team’s first coach who is deaf.

“Deafness to me is power,” he said. “Deafness is proof that we have the
power to overcome.”

Ramirez joined Cyprus after being a freshman coach last year at Cedar
Valley High School. He faced adversity trying to find his next position
prior to landing the position with Cyprus.

rest of story at:
https://ksltv.com/444496/coach-who-is-deaf/

note:
He is not the first head coach of a high school team that was deaf.

This honor goes to Gary Klingensmith, who won 300 career games at
Juniata High School in Pennsylvania. He began his coaching career
at Gallaudet, coaching three seasons before moving on.

Gary had to rely on his hearing aid to communicate with the hearing.
Take off his hearing aid, he is helpless. As he got older, he lost all
of his hearing but continued coaching and as a high school teacher.

In the latter part of his coaching career he got a CI which helped
restore his hearing.

He retired from teaching but continued to coach several more seasons
before stepping down last season.

As a Gallaudet coach he defeated Frostburg and Shepherd, both of
which have moved up to  NCAA-II. Both wins were the last time
Gallaudet defeated both teams.
