Gallaudet hall of fame

Gallaudet Athletics HOF Class of 2020 Q&A with Valerie Trofimenkoff McCabe

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department is gearing up
for the 2020 Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony being held
virtually this Friday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m. (Eastern).

full story at:

note:
Valerie is unusual in that she graduated from a school for the deaf in
Canada while being an American citizen.

Gallaudet Athletics HOF Class of 2020 Q&A with William Bissell

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department is gearing up
for the 2020 Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony being held
virtually this Friday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m. (Eastern).

full story at:
https://www.gallaudetathletics.com/news/2020-21/hofqa-bissell

note:
Bissell very easily qualifies as one of the greatest baseball
players, if not the greatest, in Gallaudet baseball history.
Misfortune, however, will affect some great athletes, both
deaf and hearing. He suffered two season-ending injuries.
First was as a freshman after only playing a few games;
NCAA granted him an extra year of eligibility. Another
great Gallaudet athlete with these two season-ending
injuries come to mind – women’s basketball great
Corina Gutierrez.

Ohio changed a rule in track and field

Edward G. Ziegler, an outstanding deaf trackster
in Ohio, passed away.

part of newspaper story:
Ed never let the fact that he was deaf from an early age stop him from
participating in life. He was proud to represent North Baltimore High
School (Class of 1962) in track and field events during his high school
career. He will forever hold the Wood County record in the 100-yard dash,
set in 1962 with a time of 10.15 seconds, and ran at the Ohio State Track
and Field event his senior year. Due to his deafness, the OSHSAA made a
rule change so that the starter would be on his side of the track when he
ran so he could watch for the smoke from the gun.

random deafsports thoughts

Can we think of all these sports in which rules were changed
to benefit deaf athletes?

Baseball, boxing, swimming, track and field, hockey.

Any others?
