NSAA to address grievances of deaf Gering wrestler Paul Ruff over state
tourney accommodations

More than two weeks after the State Wrestling Championships, the family of
Gering wrestler Paul Ruff is expecting some answers this week. The NSAA
will address their grievances about the Class B 126-pound title match.

Paul Ruff, who is deaf, lost 1-0 to Scottsbluff’s Paul Garcia after Garcia
was given a point on a second caution for the way Ruff was lining up on a
restart.

The family continues pursuing options, Paul’s father, Scott Ruff said, to
be advocates for other students with disabilities to have an even playing
field.

Texas wrestling

Summary from TSD wrestling coach –

TSD wrestling is finally back in action! The team attended the Gorman
Invitational tournament in Tyler, Texas. With only a week of practice, the
coaches were definitely proud and impressed with the results. Out of 15
boys that wrestled 12 of them placed in the top 3! Several of them enjoyed
a great result after a few year hiatus from wrestling. Hawins Morgan,
Brandon Brentham, Zefan Nathanson and Joshua Saaty won 1st place.  Elijah
Oliver, Titus Sterling, Jordan Leeper, Zachary Hurt, Marion Walker and
Aalijah Crumpton took 2nd. Zarek Nathanson and Kevin Lopez took third
place. We look forward to a fun season with them!

random deafsports thoughts

NFL has Black referees.

NFL has two female referees.

NFL has ZERO deaf referees.

We have many, many deaf referees that officiate hearing high school
football games – but there is a hidden discrimination. Many, if not
all of them, have been limited to Back Judges. They just look
for pass interference, illegal blocks downfield, and incomplete passes.

Is that the easiest job a referee could do (without the need to
explain the flags to the “boss” (white capped head referee?)

Years ago a deaf referee wanted to establish a national
organization of deaf football referees. Nothing came out of it.
